MATERIALS: CHADWICK'S RED HEART SOCK AND SWEATER YARN, 3 Ply, Shrink-and-Stretch Resist Finish, Art. E.255: 7 (8, 9) skeins (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof Pull- Out Skeins) of No. 1 White; 1 skein each of No. 789 Bittersweet, No. 230 Yellow and No. 647 Surf Green. ... Milwards "Phantom" Aluminum Knitting Pins or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size). ... Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 2. ... 6 buttons. ... Grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wide.

GAUGE: Stockinette st—7½ sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS: Bust—34 (36, 38) inches; Width across back at underarm—17 (18, 19) inches; Width across back above armhole shaping—14 (15, 16) inches; Width across each front at underarm—9¾ (10¼, 10¾) inches; Length from shoulder to lower edge—21 (21¾, 23) inches; Length of side seam—13½ (14, 15) inches; Length of sleeve seam—4 (4, 4½) inches; Width across sleeve at upperarm—12¼ (13, 14) inches.

BACK ... Starting at lower edge with White, cast on 126 (132, 138) sts. Work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) as follows: 1st row: * K the next 42 (44, 46) sts, place a marker. Repeat from * once more, k the last 42 (44, 46) sts. 2nd row: P across, slipping markers. Continue in stockinette st, slipping markers, until piece measures 1 inch, ending with a p row.

Now work decreases as follows: Next row: * K 2 tog, k 38 (40, 42) sts, k 2 tog, slip marker. Repeat from * once more, k 2 tog, k 38 (40, 42) sts, k 2 tog. Following row: P across, slipping markers. Continue in stockinette st, de­creasing 1 st at both ends of every 7th row thereafter 6 times in all and decreasing 1 st at each side of both markers as before on every 10th row 5 times in all. There remain 94 (100, 106) sts on needle. Work without decreasing until piece measures in all 5½ (5¾, 5¾) inches, ending with a p row.

Now work increases as follows: Next row: Inc 1 st at the beginning of row, * k across to last st before marker, inc 1 st in next st, slip marker, inc 1 st in next st. Repeat from * once more, k across to last st, inc 1 st in next St. Following row: P across, slipping markers. Continue in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 7th row thereafter 10 times in all and increasing 1 st at each side of both markers on every 10th row thereafter 4 times in all. There are on needle 130 (136, 142) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures in all 13½ (14, 15) inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of the next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 106 (112, 118) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping ¾ (1, 1¼) inches, ending with a p row. On Sizes 14 and 18 only: Inc 1 st at the end of last row. On Size 16 only: Dec 1 st at end of last row. There are on needle 107 (111, 119) sts.

YOKE ... Work in pattern for Yoke as follows: 1st row: Attach Surf Green, * k 3 Surf Green, sl 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 3 Surf Green. 2nd row: * K 3, place yarn in front of work, sl 1, place yarn in back of work. Repeat from * across, ending with k 3. 3rd row: Attach Bittersweet, k 1, * sl 1, k 3. Repeat from * across, ending with sl 1, k 1. 4th row: K 1, * place yarn in front of work, sl 1, place yarn in back of work, k 3. Repeat from * across, ending with sl 1, k 1. 5th and 6th rows: With Yellow, repeat first and 2nd rows. 7th and 8th rows: With Surf Green, repeat 3rd and 4th rows. 9th and 10th rows: With Bittersweet, repeat first and 2nd rows. 11th and 12th rows: With Yellow, repeat 3rd and 4th rows. 13th to 20th rows incl: Repeat first to 8th rows incl. 21st row: With White, repeat first row. 22nd row: With White, * p 3, sl 1. Repeat from * across, ending with p 3. 23rd to 32nd rows incl: With White, work in stockinette St. Repeat the first to 32nd rows incl once more, then repeat first to 22nd rows incl once. With White, work in stockinette st until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 7½ (7¾, 8) inches.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 11 (12, 13) sts at beginning of the next 6 rows. Bind off, for back of neck, the remaining 41 (39, 41) sts.

LEFT FRONT ... Starting at lower edge with White, cast on 71 (75, 79) sts. Work in stockinette st as follows: 1st row: K the first 42 (44, 46) sts, place a marker, k the last 29 (31, 33) sts. Work is now at center front edge. 2nd row: P across, slipping markers. Work in stockinette st until piece measures 1 inch in all, ending at side edge. Next row: K 2 tog at the beginning of row, k across to 2 sts before marker, k 2 tog, slip marker, k 2 tog, k to end of row. Following row: P across, slipping markers. Con­tinue in stockinette st, decreasing 1 st at side edge on every 7th row thereafter 6 times in all and decreasing 1 st at each side of marker on every 10th row 5 times in all. There are on needle 55 (59, 63) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures in all 5½ (5¾, 5¾) inches, ending at side edge. Next row: Inc 1 st at beginning of next row, k across to last st before marker, inc 1 st in next st, slip marker, inc 1 st in next st, k to end of row. Following row: P across, slipping marker. Continue in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at side edge every 7th row thereafter 10 times in all and increasing 1 st at each side of marker on every 10th row thereafter 4 times in all. There are on needle 73 (77, 81) sts. Now work without increasing until piece measures in all, ending at side edge 13½ (14, 15) inches.

To Shape Armhole: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of next row. Dec 1 st at armhole edge on every other row until there remain 61 (65, 69) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending with a p row ¾ (1, 1¼) inches, decreasing 2 sts evenly across last row. There remain on needle 59 (63, 67) sts. Now work in pattern as for Yoke pattern until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge 5½ (5¾, 6) inches.

To Shape Neck: Bind off 8 (9, 10) sts at beginning of the next row. Bind off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 4 times, then dec 1 st at same edge on every row until there remain 33 (36, 39) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at arm- hole edge 7½ (7¾, 8) inches.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 11 (12, 13) sts at beginning of the next row and every other row thereafter 3 times in all.

Position of Buttonholes: With pins, mark the position of 6 buttonholes evenly spaced on Left Front, having the first pinmark 4½ inches up from lower edge and the last pin-mark ½ inch down from neck edge. Pins indicate position of buttonholes on Right Front.

RIGHT FRONT ... Work as for Left Front, reversing shapings and making a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge opposite each pinmark—to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts and on the next row cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.

SLEEVES ... Starting at lower edge with White, cast on 77 (81, 89) sts. Work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until there are on needle 93 (97, 105) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures in all 4 (4, 4½) inches.

To Shape Top: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of the next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until piece measures ¾ (1, 1¼) inches. Now work in pattern as for Yoke pattern, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there remain 47 (61, 71) sts. Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until 35 sts remain. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of the next 8 rows. Bind off the remain­ing 19 sts.

COLLAR ... Starting at neck edge with White, cast on 101 (111, 111) sts. Work in stockinette st for 4 rows. Next row: K the first 2 (3, 3) sts, inc 1 st in next st, * k 7, inc 1 st in next St. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2 (3, 3) sts. There are on needle 114 (125, 125) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures 1 inch in all. Now dec 1 st at both ends of every other row 4 times in all. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of the next 6 rows. Bind off the remaining 94 (105, 105) sts.

Block to measurements. Sew side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. With crochet hook and White, work 2 rows of sc around front and lower edges of blouse and sleeves, and around outer edge of collar. Sew collar in place, leaving ½ inch free at each front edge. Line front edges with grosgrain ribbon, cutting buttonholes in ribbon to match buttonholes on blouse. Work buttonhole st around button­holes. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2¾ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 2 1 (2¾ mm. size). ... Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 2. ... 8 buttons. ... Grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wide.

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS: Chest (blouse buttoned)—28 (30, 32) inches: Width across back at underarm—14 (15, 16); Width across back above armhole shaping—11 (11¾, 12¾) inches; Width across each front at under­arm—7¾ (8½, 9) inches; Length from shoulder to lower edge—15 (16½, 18) inches; Length of side seam—10 (10½, 11) inches; Length of sleeve seam—2½ (3, 3½) inches. Width across sleeve at upperarm—9 (9½,10½) inches.

BACK ... Starting at lower edge with White and No. 1 knitting pins, cast on 104 (112, 120) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1½ (2, 2½) inches, increasing 1 st on last row. Change to No. 2 knitting pins and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), until piece measures in all 10 (10½, 11) inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 (8, 8) sts at beginning of the next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 83 (87, 95) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending with a p row ¾ (1¾, 2¾) inches.

YOKE ... Now work in pattern as follows: 1st to 14th rows incl: Repeat 1st to 14th rows incl of Yoke pattern for No. 152A. 15th row: With White repeat 3rd row of No. 152A. 16th row: With White, p 1, * sl 1, p 3. Repeat from * across, ending with sl 1, p 1. 17th to 22nd rows incl: With White, work in stockinette St. Repeat the first to 22nd rows incl once more, then repeat first to 16th rows incl once more. With White, work in stockinette st until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 5 (6, 7) inches.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 13 (13, 15) sts at beginning of the next 4 rows. Bind off for back of neck the remain­ing 31 (35, 35) sts.

LEFT FRONT ... Starting at lower edge with White and No. 1 knitting pins, cast on 56 (60, 64) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1½ (2, 2½) inches, increasing 2 (4, 4) sts on last row. There are on needle 58 (64, 68) sts.

Change to No. 2 knitting pins and work in stockinette st until piece measures in all 10 (10½, 11) inches, ending at side edge.

To Shape Armhole: Bind off 7 (8, 8) sts at beginning of the next row. Dec 1 st at armhole edge on every other row thereafter until there remain 47 (51, 55) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge ¾ (1, 2½) inches. Now work in Yoke pattern as for Back until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge 3 (3½, 4½) inches.

To Shape Neck: Next row: Bind off the first 6 (8, 8) sts, work in pattern across. Continue in pattern, binding off 3 sts at neck edge every other row 3 times, then decreasing 1 st at neck edge on every row until there remain 26 (26, 30) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge 5 (6, 7) inches.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 13 (13, 15) sts at beginning of next row and every other row twice in all.

Position of Buttonholes: With pins, mark the position of 8 buttonholes evenly spaced on Left Front, having the first pinmark ½ inch up from lower edge and the last pinmark  ½ inch down from neck edge. Pins indicate position of buttonholes on Right Front.

RIGHT FRONT ... Work as for Left Front, reversing shapings and making a buttonhole 2 sts in from front edge opposite each pinmark—to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 3 sts and on the next row cast on 3 sts to replace those bound off.

SLEEVES ... Starting at cuff with White and No. 1 knitting pins, cast on 64 (68, 72) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for ¾ (¾, 1) inch, increasing 1 st on last row.

Change to No. 2 knitting pins and work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there are 69 (73, 79) sts on needle. Work without increasing until piece measures in all 2½ (3, 3½) inches.

To Shape Top: Bind off 7 (8, 8) sts at beginning of the next 2 rows. On Sizes 10 and 12 only: Dec 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there remain (37, 39) sts.

On all Sizes: Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 15 (19, 21) sts,

At the Same Time

when piece measures ¾ (1¾, 2¾) inches from first row of armhole shaping, work in Yoke pattern for remainder of sleeve. Bind off.

COLLAR ... Starting at neck edge with White and No. 2 knitting pins, cast on 91 (99, 99) sts. Work in stockinette st for 2 rows. 3rd row: K the first st, * inc 1 st in next st, k 7. Repeat from * across, ending with inc 1 st in next st, k 1. There are on needle 103 (112, 112) sts. Work without increasing for 3 more rows. Now dec 1 st at both ends of next row and every other row twice in all. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of the next 4 (6, 6) rows. Bind off.

Block to measurements. Sew side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. With crochet hook and White, work 2 rows of sc along front edges and around outer edge of collar. Line front edges with grosgrain ribbon, cutting button­holes in ribbon to correspond with buttonholes on blouse. Work buttonhole st around buttonholes. Sew collar in place, leaving ½ inch free at front edges. Sew on buttons to cor­respond with buttonholes.
