MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SLEEVELESS SWEATER C-153 A

Sizes 30-40

Directions are given for Size 30.
Changes for Sizes 32, 34, 36, 38 and 40 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS: CHADWICK'S RED HEART SOCK AND SWEATER YARN, 3 Ply, Shrink-and-Stretch Resist Finish, Art. E.255: 5 (6, 6, 7, 7, 8) skeins (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins) of No. 403 Lt. Oxford. ... Milwards "Phantom" Aluminum Knitting Pins or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size).

GAUGE: 7½ sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS: Chest—30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40) inches; Width across back or front at underarm—15 (16, 17, 18, 19, 20) inches; Width across back above arm- hole shaping (excluding armbands)—11¾ (12½, 13¼, 14, 14¾,15½) inches; Length from shoulder to lower edge—18 (18½, 19½, 20, 21, 21½) inches; Length of side seam (excluding armbands)—11 (11, 11½,11½, 12, 12) inches.

BACK ... Starting at lower edge with No. 1 knitting pins, cast on 92 (100, 104, 112, 120, 128) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2½ (2½, 3, 3, 3½, 3½) inches, increasing evenly across last row 21 (21, 23, 23, 23, 23) sts. There are on needle 113 (121, 127, 135, 143, 151) sts.

Change to No. 2 knitting pins and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K across. 2nd row: P across. 3rd row: K the first—(—, 2,—, 1,—) sts, p the next 1 (5, 6, 3, 6, 2) sts, * k 3, p 6. Repeat from * across, ending with k 3, p the next 1 (5, 6, 3, 6, 2) sts, k the last—(—, 2,—, 1,—) sts. 4th row: P the first—(—, 2,—, 1,—) sts, k the next 1 (5, 6, 3, 6, 2) sts, * p 3, k 6. Repeat from * across, ending with p 3, k the next 1 (5, 6, 3, 6, 2) sts, p the last—(—, 2,—, 1,—) sts. The last 4 rows (first to 4th rows incl) constitute pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures in all 11 (11½, 11½, 12, 12) inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of the next 2 rows. Keeping continuity of pattern, dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 89 (95, 99, 103, 111, 117) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 7 (7½, 8, 8½, 9, 9½) inches.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 11 (10, 11, 12, 13, 13) sts at beginning of the next 4 (4, 6, 4, 4, 6) rows. Bind off 7 (11,—, 10, 11,—) sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Next row: Work across, increasing 3 (1, 1, 3, 1, 3) sts evenly across.

BACK NECKBAND ... Change to No. 1 knitting pins and work over the remaining 34 (34, 34, 38, 38, 42) sts as follows: 1st row: * K 2, p 2. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2. 2nd row: * P 2, k 2. Repeat from * across, end­ing with p 2. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until neck­band measures 1 inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

FRONT ... Work exactly as for Back until piece measures 1¾ inches from first row of armhole shaping.

To Shape Neck: Next row: With right side facing, work in pattern across the first 43 (46, 48, 50, 54, 57) sts, place the next 3 sts onto a safety pin to be worked later for neck­band, then place the remaining sts on a stitch holder to be worked later for other side of neck. Turn and work over the first set of sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge on next row and every 3rd row thereafter until there remain 29 (31, 33, 34, 37, 39) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge 7 (7½, 8, 8½, 9, 9½) inches, ending at armhole edge.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 11 (10, 11, 12, 13, 13) sts at beginning of next row and every other row 2 (2, 3, 2, 2, 3) times. On Sizes 30, 32, 36 and 38 only: Work one more row. Bind off remaining sts.

Attach yarn to opposite side of neck and work other side to correspond, reversing shapings.

FRONT NECKBAND ... 1st row: With right side facing and No. 1 knitting pins, pick up and k 54 (58, 62, 66, 70, 74) sts along left neck edge, place a marker, k the 3 center sts from safety pin, place a marker, pick up and k 54 (58, 62, 66, 70, 74) sts along right neck edge. 2nd row: * K 2, p 2. Repeat from * across to marker, ending with k 2, slip marker, p 3, slip marker, ** k 2, p 2. Repeat from ** across, ending with k 2. 3rd row: * P 2, k 2. Repeat from * across to 2 sts before marker, p 2 tog, slip marker, k 3, slip marker, p 2 tog, ** k 2, p 2. Repeat from ** across. Work in this manner, decreasing 1 st before first marker and after 2nd marker every other row, keeping the 3 center sts as established, until neckband measures 1 inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing. Sew shoulder seams.

ARMBANDS ... With right side facing and No. 1 knit­ting pins, pick up and k 148 (156, 164, 172, 180, 188) sts, around entire armhole edge, including bound-off sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1 inch. Bind off in ribbing.

Block to measurements. Sew side seams.

MATERIALS: CHADWICK'S RED HEART SOCK AND SWEATER YARN, 3 Ply, Shrink-and-Stretch Resist Finish, Art. E.255: 9 (10, 11, 12, 13, 14) skeins of No. 405 Oxford. ... Milwards "Phantom" Aluminum Knitting Pins or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size). ... 7 buttons. ... Grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wide.

GAUGE: 7½ sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS: Chest (cardigan but­toned)—31 (33, 35, 37, 39, 41) inches; Width across back at underarm—15 (16, 17, 18, 19, 20) inches; Width across back above armhole shaping—11¾ (12½, 13¼, 14, 14¾, 15½) inches; Width across each front at underarm—8½ (9, 9½ , 10, 10¾, 11¼) inches; Length from shoulder to lower edge—19 (19½, 20½, 21, 22, 22½) inches; Length of side seam—12 (12, 12½, 12½, 13, 13) inches; Length of sleeve seam—16½, (17, 17, 17½, 18, 18) inches; Width across sleeve at upperarm—11 (11½, 12, 12, 12½, 13) inches.

BACK ... Work exactly as for Back of Sweater No. C153A until piece measures in all 12 (12, 12½, 12½, 13, 13) inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of the next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 89 (95, 99, 103, 111, 117) sts. Work in pat­tern without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 7 (7½, 8, 8½, 9, 9½) inches.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 11 (10, 11, 12, 13, 13) sts at beginning of the next 4 (4, 6, 4, 4, 6) rows. Bind off 7 (11,—, 10, 11,—) sts at beginning of the next 2 rows. Next row: Work across, increasing 3 (1, 1, 3, 1, 3) sts evenly across. Place the remaining 34 (34, 34, 38, 38, 42) sts on a stitch holder to be worked later for Neckband.

Note: Buttonholes are made on Left Front for Men and on Right Front for Women. Make a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge when piece measures ¾ (1¼, ½, ¾, 1½, 2) inches and every 2¾ (2¾, 3, 3, 3, 3) inches there­after until 6 buttonholes in all have been made—to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 3 sts and on the next row cast on 3 sts to replace those bound off. The last button­hole is made on Neckband in line with previous buttonholes.

LEFT FRONT ... Starting at lower edge with No. 1 knitting pins, cast on 52 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72) sts. Work as follows: 1st row: * K 2, p 2. Repeat from * across to last 12 sts, k 12. 2nd row: P 12 (front band), * k 2, p 2. Repeat from * across. 3rd row: * K 2, p 2. Repeat from * across to last 12 sts, k 3, p 6, k 3. 4th row: P 3, k 6, p 3, * k 2, p 2. Repeat from * across. Repeat the last 4 rows until piece measures 2½ (2½, 3, 3, 3½, 3½) inches, increasing 12 sts evenly across last row (do not increase in front band). There are on needle 64 (68, 72, 76, 80, 84) sts.

Change to No. 2 knitting pins and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: With right side facing, k across. 2nd row: P across. 3rd row: On Size 30 only: K 1. On Sizes 30, 32, 34, 36 and 38 only: P 6 (2, 6, 1, 5,—) sts. On all Sizes: * K 3, p 6. Repeat from * across, ending with k 3. 4th row: * P 3, k 6. Repeat from * across, ending with—On Sizes 30, 32, 36, 38 and 40 only: p 1 (3,—, 3, 3, 3) sts; On Sizes 32, 36 and 38 only: k—(2,—, 1, 5,—) sts. The last 4 rows (first to 4th rows incl) constitute pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures in all 12 (12, 12½, 12½, 13, 13) inches, ending at side edge.

To Shape Armhole: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of next row. Dec 1 st at same edge on every other row until there remain 52 (55, 58, 60, 64, 67) sts. Work in pattern without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge 4¾ (5¼, 5½, 5¾, 6, 6½) inches.

To Shape Neck: Work in pattern across the first 12 sts and place these sts on a stitch holder to be worked later for Neckband. Work in pattern across. Continue in pattern, binding off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 4) times in all, then dec 1 st at same edge on every row thereafter until there remain 29 (31, 33, 34, 37, 39) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge 7 (7½, 8, 8½, 9, 9½) inches.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 11 (10. 11, 12, 13, 13) sts at beginning of next row and every other row thereafter 2 (2, 3, 2, 2, 3) times in all. Bind off 7 (11,—, 10, 11,—) sts at same edge once.

RIGHT FRONT ... Work exactly as for Left Front, reversing shapings, pattern and front band.

SLEEVES ... Starting at cuff with No. 1 knitting pins, cast on 52 (56, 60, 60, 64, 68) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 (2½, 2½, 3, 3, 3) inches, increasing 5 (10, 6, 6, 11, 7) sts evenly across last row. There are on needle 57 (66, 66, 66, 75, 75) sts. Change to No. 2 knitting pins and work in pattern as for Back, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 10th row until there are on needle 81 (86, 90, 90, 93, 99) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures in all 16½ (17, 17, 17½, 18, 18) inches.

To Shape Top: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of the next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 27 (30, 32, 28, 29, 33) sts. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of the next 6 (6, 6, 4, 4, 6) rows. Bind off remaining sts.

NECKBAND ... Sew shoulder seams. With right side facing and No. 1 knitting pins, k the 12 sts from right front stitch holder, pick up and k 22 (22, 26, 30, 30, 30) sts along right front edge, k the 34 (34, 34, 38, 38, 42) sts from back stitch holder, pick up and k 22 (22, 26, 30, 30, 30) sts from left front edge, k the 12 sts from Left Front stitch holder. There are on needle 102 (102, 110, 122, 122, 126) sts. Work as follows: 1st row: Work in pattern across the first 12 sts, * k 2, p 2. Repeat from * across to last 14 sts, k 2, work in pattern across last 12 sts. Keeping first and last 12 sts in pattern, continue working in ribbing as established, until piece measures 1 inch, making a but­tonhole in line with previous buttonholes when piece meas­ures ½ inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

Block to measurements. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Line front edges with grosgrain ribbon, cutting buttonholes on ribbon to correspond with buttonholes on cardigan. Work buttonhole st around buttonholes. Sew on buttons.
