MATERIALS: CHADWICK'S RED HEART SOCK AND SWEATER YARN, 3 Ply, Shrink-and-Stretch Resist Finish, Art. E.255: 5 (6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7) skeins of No. 420 Natural. ... Milwards "Phantom" Aluminum Knitting Pins or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).

GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS: Chest—34 (36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46) inches; Width across back or front at under­arm—17 (18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23) inches; Length from shoulder to lower edge—20 (20½, 21½, 22, 23, 23½, 24½) inches; Length of side seam (excluding armbands)—12 (12, 12½, 12½, 13, 13, 13½) inches.

BACK ... Starting at lower edge with No. 1 knitting pins, cast on 116 (124, 132, 140, 144, 152, 160) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2½ (2½, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3) inches, in­creasing 3 (3, 1, 1, 3, 3, 1) sts evenly across last row. There are on needle 119 (127, 133, 141, 147, 155, 161) sts.

Change to No. 3 knitting pins and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 3 (7, 2, 6, 1, 5,—) sts; On all Sizes: * P 1, k 7. Repeat from * across, ending with p 1, then k 3 (7, 2, 6, 1, 5,—) sts. 2nd row: P across. 3rd row: K across. 4th row: P across. 5th row: K 7 (3, 6, 2, 5, 1, 4) sts, p 1, * k 7, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 7 (3, 6, 2, 5, 1, 4) sts. 6th, 7th and 8th rows: Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows. The last 8 rows (first to 8th rows incl) constitute pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures in all 12 (12, 12½, 12½, 13, 13, 13½) inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of the next 2 rows. On Sizes 38, 40, 42, 44 and 46 only: Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain—(—, 115, 113, 119, 117, 111) sts; On all Sizes: Dec 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there remain 59 (65, 65, 67, 71, 73, 73) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 8 (8½, 9, 9½, 10, 10½, 11) inches.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 6 (7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8) sts at beginning of the next 4 rows. Place the remaining 35 (37, 37, 39, 39, 41, 41) sts on a stitch holder to be worked later for neck.

POCKET LINING ... With No. 3 knitting pins, cast on 31 sts. Work in pattern for 4 inches, decreasing 1 st on last row. Place on a spare needle to be worked later.

Note: When inserting Pocket Lining, be careful to match pattern of Pocket Lining with pattern of Front.

FRONT ... Work exactly as for Back until piece measures 12 (12, 12½, 12½, 13, 13, 13½) inches. Next row: With right side facing, bind off the first 7 sts, work in pattern across the next 15 (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21) sts, place a marker, work in pattern over the next 30 sts, place a marker, work in pattern across. Position of pocket has now been established. Following row: Bind off 7 sts at the beginning of row, work in pattern across. Continue to decrease as for Back, slipping markers, until piece measures ¾ inch from first row of armhole shaping. Next row: With right side facing, work in pattern across to first marker, slip marker, * p 2, k 2. Repeat from * 6 more times, p 2, slip marker, work in pattern across. Continue to decrease at armhole edges as for Back, keeping continuity of ribbing over the 30 sts between markers, until ribbing measures ¾ inch. Mark center St. Next row: With right side facing, work in pattern across to first marker, bind off the next 30 sts, slip marker, work in pattern across to 2 sts before center st, k 2 tog (neck edge), slip center st onto a piece of thread to be worked later for neckband. Turn and work over this set of sts only as follows: Following row: Work in pattern across to marker, remove marker, work in pattern across the 30 sts from spare needle (pocket lining), remove marker, work in pattern across. Continue to decrease at armhole edge as for Back and dec 1 st at neck edge on every 3rd (3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 4th, 4th) row thereafter 16 (17, 17, 18, 18, 19, 19) more times. Work in this manner until there remain 12 (14, 14, 14, 16, 16, 16,) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge 8 (8½, 9, 9½, 10, 10½, 11) inches.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 6 (7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8) sts at beginning of next row and every other row twice in all.

Attach yarn where sts were divided for neck and work to correspond with other side, omitting pocket opening and reversing shapings.

NECKBAND ... Sew left shoulder seam. With right side facing and No. 1 knitting pins, k the 35 (37, 37, 39, 39, 41, 41) sts from back stitch holder, pick up and k 57 (59, 63, 73, 77, 79, 83) sts along left front edge, place a marker, k 1 st from thread, place a marker, pick up and k 56 (60, 64, 72, 76, 80, 84) sts along right front edge. 1st row: * P 2, k 2. Repeat from * across to marker, slip marker, p 1, slip marker, ** k 2, p 2. Repeat from ** across. 2nd row: * K 2, p 2. Repeat from * across to 2 sts before marker, p 2 tog, slip marker, k 1, slip marker, p 2 tog, ** k 2, p 2. Repeat from ** across. Work in this manner, decreasing 1 st before first and after second markers on every other row and keeping the center st as established until Neck­band measures ¾ inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

ARMBANDS ... Sew right shoulder seam. With right side facing and No. 1 knitting pins, pick up and k around entire armhole edge, including bound-off sts, 156 (164, 172, 180, 192, 200, 208) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for ¾ inch. Bind off in ribbing.

Block to measurements. Sew side seams. Sew pocket in place on wrong side.
