Medium Size

MATERIALS: CHADWICK'S RED HEART SOCK AND SWEATER YARN, 3 Ply, Shrink-and-Stretch Resist Finish, Art. E.255: 9 skeins (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-out Skeins) of No. 1 White. ... Milwards "Phantom" Aluminum Knitting Pins or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size). ... 2 buttons. ... 1 yard of white grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wide.

GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 11 rows make 1 inch.

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS: Bust—34 inches; Length from shoulder to lower edge—16¼ inches; Length of side seam to marker—5 inches; Length of sleeve seam to marker—15½ inches.

BACK ... Starting at lower edge, cast on 90 sts. Work in ribbing as follows: 1st row: * K 2, p 2. Repeat from * to last 2 sts, k 2. 2nd row: * P 2, k 2. Repeat from * to last 2 sts, p 2. Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures 1 inch.

Now work in pattern as follows: 1st and 2nd rows: * K 2, p 2. Repeat from * to last 2 sts, k 2. 3rd and 4th rows: * P 2, k 2. Repeat from * to last 2 sts, p 2. The last 4 rows constitute pattern. Work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until there are 106 sts on needle. Work without increasing until piece measures 5 inches in all. Place a marker.

To Shape Sleeves: Keeping continuity of pattern, cast on 2 sts at end of next 10 rows. Cast on 4 sts at end of next 12 rows. Cast on 8 sts at end of next 16 rows. Now inc 1 st at both ends of every 11th row 4 times. There are 310 sts on needle. Work in pattern without increasing until piece measures 13½ inches in all.

To Shape Top of Sleeves and Shoulders: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of the next 40 rows. Break off. Place the remain­ing 30 sts on a double-pointed needle to be worked for collar.

LEFT FRONT ... Starting at lower edge, cast on 62 sts. Work in ribbing as for Back for 1 inch. Now work in pat­tern, increasing 1 st at side edge on every 5th row 8 times in all

At the Same Time

when piece measures 3 inches in all, ending at front edge, inc 1 st at the beginning of next row and every 16th row thereafter 8 times in all. Work without increasing at side edge until piece measures 5 inches in all. Place a marker.

To Shape Sleeve: Keeping continuity of pattern and still increasing at front edge as directed, cast on 2 sts at side edge every other row 5 times. Cast on 4 sts at side edge every other row 6 times. Cast on 8 sts at side edge every other row 8 times. Now inc 1 st at side edge on every 11th row 4 times. Work without increasing at cuff edge until piece measures 13½ inches in all, ending at cuff edge.

To Shape Top of Sleeve and Shoulder: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of the next row and every other row thereafter 20 times in all. Break off. Place the remaining 40 sts on a double-pointed needle to be worked later for collar.

RIGHT FRONT ... Starting at lower edge, cast on 62 sts. Work in ribbing as for Back for ½ inch, ending at front edge. Next row: K 2, p 2, bind off next 4 sts, (k 2, p 2) 3 times; k 2, bind off the next 4 sts, work in ribbing to end of row. Following row: Work in ribbing across, casting on 4 sts over each set of bound-off sts (buttonholes made). Complete as for Left Front, reversing shapings, ending at shoulder edge.

COLLAR ... With right side facing, and using the needle with the 40 sts from Right Front, work in pattern across the 30 sts from Back, and the 40 sts from Left Front, being very careful to match pattern. There are 110 sts on needle. Work in pattern, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until 98 sts remain. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of the next 20 rows. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of the next 6 rows. Bind off the remaining 14 sts.

BINDING ... With wrong side facing, starting 3 inches from lower edge of Left Front, pick up and k 306 sts all around front and collar edges to 3 inches from lower edge of Right Front. Work in ribbing as for Back for 3 rows, picking up and knitting 4 more sts down front edge at the end of last row. Turn. Next row: Work in ribbing across, pick up and k 4 more sts down other front edge. Work in ribbing, picking up 4 sts down front edges at the end of next 4 rows. There are 330 sts on needle. Binding reaches to top of ribbing on both front parts. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

CUFFS ... Sew shoulder seams. With right side facing, pick up and k 64 sts around cuff edge. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 9 rows. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

Sew side and sleeve seams in one continuous seam. Line ribbing at lower edge with grosgrain ribbon, cutting button­holes to match buttonholes on ribbing. Work buttonhole st around buttonholes. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
