MATERIALS:
NOMOTTA Mothproof Zephyr Fingering (matched dye lots)
3 (3-4) 1-oz. balls Main Color (MC)
small amounts of Contrasting Colors A and B for pattern
1 pair needles each of size 1 and 2
6 buttons
GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 12 rows = 1 inch
BACK: With MC and size 1 needles, cast on 88 (92-96) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 1½ (2-2) ins increasing 1 stitch at each end of last row; 90 (94-98) sts. Change to size 2 needles. Purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row.
Following chart for Border, work in Stockinette-st (K 1 row, P 1 row)—always carry yarn not in use loosely across wrong side of work. With MC, continue in Stockinette-st until back measures 7½ (8-8½) ins from start.
Shape Raglan Armhole: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off 1 stitch at beginning of every row until 32 (33-35) sts remain. Slip sts on a holder for neck.
NOTE: Buttonholes are worked on Left Front for Boy, on Right Front for Girl. Work the Front without buttonholes first.
LEFT FRONT: With MC and size 1 needles, cast on 51 (53-55) sts. Keeping 6 sts at center front edge in Garter-st (K every row) work in ribbing across remaining 45 (47-49) sts for 1½ (2-2) ins, end at center front edge. Change to size 2 needles.
Keeping Garter-st edge, purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Following chart for Border work in Stockinette-st. With MC, work straight until front measures 7½ (8-8½) ins from start.
Shape Raglan Armhole: Bind off 5 sts at armhole edge. Bind off 1 stitch at same edge at beginning of every row 25 (26-27) times; at the same time, when there are 26 (26-28) sts on needle
Shape Neck as follows: Bind off 10 (11-12) sts once; 3 sts every other row 3 times. Bind off remaining 2 sts.
With pins, mark position of 6 buttons in Left Front border as a guide in working buttonholes, placing first pin about ¾ inch from bottom and 5th buttonhole about 1½ ins below neck edge (6th buttonhole is worked in center of neckband).
RIGHT FRONT: Work same as for Left Front, reversing shaping and working 5 Buttonholes as follows: Starting at front edge, K 2, bind off next 2 sts, work to end of row. On next row, cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts.
SLEEVES: With MC and size 1 needles, cast on 50 (52-54) sts. Work in ribbing for 1 (1-1½) ins. Knit next row, increasing 9 sts evenly spaced across row; 59 (61-63) sts. Purl back. Change to size 2 needles, knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Following chart, work the Border. With MC, continue in Stockinette-st increasing 1 stitch at each side every 8th row 3 (4-4) times; 65 (69-71) sts. Work straight until sleeve measures 8 (9-9½) ins from start.
Shape Raglan Armhole: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off 1 stitch at beginning of every row until 7 (9-9) sts remain. Bind off on next row.
FINISHING: Press each piece lightly and sew seams. Neckband: With right side facing you and using size 1 needles, pick up and knit 94 (100-100) sts around neck including the sts on holder. Keeping 6 sts at each end in Garter-st, work firmly in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 8 rows and bind off in ribbing on next row.
