Country Weekend Sweater Pattern

Directions are given for Size 36. Changes for Sizes 38, 40 and 42 are in parentheses.

A beautifully tailored casual sweater for Dad ─ with the favorite new boat neck.

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 232 (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 18 (20, 22, 24) skeins of No. 420 Natural.

Knitting needles, 1 pair of No. 3 and No. 6.

GAUGE: 5½ sts = 1 inch; 7 rows = 1 inch.

BACK Starting at lower edge with No. 3 needles cast on 106 (114, 118, 122) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 3½ inches, increasing 1 st on last row. Change to No. 6 needles and work in pattern as follows: 1st row (right side): P 3, * k 1, p 3. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: K 3, * p 1, k 3. Repeat from * across. 3rd row: P 1, k 1, * p 3, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending with p 1. 4th row: K 1, p 1, * k 3, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 1. Repeat last 4 rows for pattern. Work in pattern until total length is 16½ (16½, 17, 17) inches.

Armhole Shaping: Bind off 6 (7, 7, 8) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row 5 (6, 7, 7) times. Work even on 85 (89, 91, 93) sts until length from first row of armhole shap­ing is 7¾ (8¼, 8¾, 9¼) inches.

Neck and Shoulder Shaping: Work in pat­tern across first 16 (18, 19, 19) sts. Place remaining 69 (71, 72, 74) sts on stitch holder to be worked later. Turn and work across the first set of sts only for ¾ inch. Bind off. Slip last 16 (18, 19, 19) sts from holder on a No. 6 needle. The center 53 (53, 53, 55) sts remain on holder. Attach yarn to first st at neck edge and work other side to cor­respond.

NECKBAND Place sts from stitch holder on a No. 3 needle. Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 1½ inches. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

FRONT Work same as Back.

SLEEVES Starting at lower edge with No. 3 needles, cast on 54 (56, 58, 60) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 3½ inches, increasing 9 (11, 13, 11) sts evenly spaced on last row. Change to No. 6 needles and work in pattern in­creasing 1 st at both ends of every 8th row 10 (9, 9, 10) times. Work even on 83 (85, 89, 91) sts until total length is 18½ (18½, 19, 19) inches.

Top Shaping: Bind off 6 (7, 7, 8) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until length is 5½ (6, 6½, 7) inches from first row of top shaping. Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 4 rows. Bind off remaining sts.

Block to measurements. Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew narrow edges of Front Neckband to neck edge of Back. Lap narrow edges of Back Neckband over the seams just made and sew in place.
