Junior League Jacket Sweater Pattern

Directions are given for Size 12. Changes for Sizes 14, 16 and 18 are in parentheses.

The tweed effect of the casual jacket is obtained by working 3 strands of yarn in simple stockinette stitch

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 232 (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 13 (15, 16, 18) skeins of No. 594 Spanish Purple, and

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" NYLON, 3 Ply, Art. E. 260 (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 4 (4, 5, 5) skeins each of No. 723 Baby Pink and No. 570 Orchid.

Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 10½.

4 buttons.

GAUGE: 3 sts = 1 inch; 4 rows = 1 inch.

BACK Starting at lower edge with Purple, cast on 55 (57, 61, 63) sts. 1st row: K 1, * p 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: P 1, * k 1, p 1. Re­peat from * across. Repeat last 2 rows for 3 inches. Place a marker on last row to indicate hemline. Attach Pink and Orchid and using all 3 strands of yarn, continue in ribbing as before' for 3 inches. Now, work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until length from hemline is 10 (10, 10½, 10½) inches, ending with a p row.

Sleeve Shaping: Inc one st at both ends of next row and every 6th row there­after, until 6 sts are increased for each sleeve. Work even across these 67 (69, 73, 75) sts until length from first row of sleeve shaping is 10 (10, 10½, 10½) inches, ending with a p row.

Shoulder and Neck Shaping: Next 4 rows: Bind off 2 sts, complete row. 5th row: Bind off 2 sts, k across until there are 22 (23, 24, 25) sts on right-hand needle. Place remaining 35 (36, 39, 40) sts on a stitch holder to be worked later. Work­ing over the sts on needle only, bind off 2 sts at beg of every row until 2 (3, 2, 3) sts remain. Bind off. Leaving center 11 (11, 13, 13) sts on stitch holder, place remaining 24 (25, 26, 27) sts on needle, attach yarn at neck edge and work to correspond with other side.

LEFT FRONT Starting at lower edge with Purple, cast on 25 (27, 29, 29) sts. Work as for Back, increasing one st on Sizes 12 and 18 only, on last row of ribbing. Work in stockinette st across these 26 (27, 29, 30) sts until length is same as Back to Sleeve Shaping, ending with a p row—side edge.

Sleeve Shaping:Inc one st at beg of next row and every 6th row thereafter, until there are 32 (33, 35, 36) sts on row. Work even until length from first row of sleeve shaping is 10 (10, 10½, 10½) inches, ending at sleeve edge.

Shoulder and Neck Shaping: 1st row: Bind off 2 sts, work across. 2nd row: Work across. Repeat last 2 rows once. 5th row: Bind off 2 sts, work next 22 (23, 24, 25) sts. Place remaining 4 (4, 5, 5) sts on a stitch holder to be worked later. Now bind off 2 sts at beg of every row until 2 (3, 2, 3) sts remain. Bind off remaining sts.

RIGHT FRONT… Work as for Left Front, reversing shapings.

NECKBAND Sew shoulder seams. With right side of work facing and all 3 strands of yarn, pick up and k around entire neck edge, including sts on holders 69 (69, 73, 73) sts. Work in ribbing as before for 3 inches. Place a marker on last row to indicate hemline. Break off Pink and Orchid. With Purple only, continue in ribbing for 3 inches. Bind off very loosely in ribbing.

RIGHT FRONT BAND With right side of work facing and all 3 strands of yarn, starting at lower hemline, pick up and k along Right Front Edge to neck hemline 76 (76, 80, 80) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for ¾ inch. With pins mark the position of 4 buttonholes evenly spaced on band, having the first pin 1 ½ inches above lower edge and last pin 1 1½ inches below neck edge. Now work buttonholes as follows: 1st row: (Work in ribbing to next pin, bind off 4 sts) 4 times; complete row. 2nd row: Work in ribbing across, casting on 4 sts to replace each set of bound-off sts. Continue in ribbing until width of Band is 1½ inches. Place a marker on last row to indicate hemline. Break off Pink and Orchid. With Purple only, continue in ribbing for ¾ inch. Now work 4 buttonholes as before. Continue in ribbing until width from hemline is 1½ inches. Bind off very loosely in ribbing.

LEFT FRONT BAND Work as for Right Front Band, omitting buttonholes.

CUFFS … With right side of work facing, and all 3 strands of yarn, pick up and k along entire sleeve edge 64 (64, 68, 68) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 6 inches. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

Block to measurements. Sew side and cuff seams. Turn all hems at hemlines to wrong side and sew in place. Work but­tonhole stitch around buttonholes. Sew buttons in place. Fold cuffs in half and turn up on right side.
