BERNAT BLARNEY-SPUN (2 oz. balls) —2
1 pair each BERNAT-Aero straight knitting needles Nos. 6 and 8 (Canadian Needles Nos. 8 and 6)
OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES THAT WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
GAUGE: 19 sts = 4 inches; 5 rows = 1 inch
NOTE: When working K 1, P 1 ribbing, always K in BACK of each K st.
PATTERN STITCH
Row 1: K 1, * skip next st, K next st, K skipped st (TWIST), P 48, work TWIST on next 2 sts, repeat from * K 1.
Row 2: P 3, * P 3 tog; K, P, K all in next st * repeat between *'s 11 times more, P 4, repeat between *'s 12 times, P 3.
Row 3: Repeat Row 1.
Row 4: P 3, * K, P, K all in next st; P 3 tog *, repeat between *'s 11 times more, P 4, repeat between *'s 12 times, P 3.
Repeat these 4 rows for pattern stitch.
CAP: Using smaller needles, cast on 106 sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches. Change to larger needles and work even in pattern st until entire piece measures 4½ inches, ending with a right side row. On next row P 16, * P 2 tog, P 13, repeat from * across row — 100 sts. SHAPE TOP: Row 1: * Work TWIST on next 2 sts, K 21, work TWIST on next 2 sts, repeat from * across row. Row 2 and all even rows: Purl. Repeat last 2 rows once more. Row 5: * Work TWIST on next 2 sts, K 2 tog, K 17, sl 1, K 1, psso, work TWIST on next 2 sts, repeat from * across row — 8 sts dec. Row 7: * Work TWIST on next 2 sts, K 2 tog, K 4; K, P, K all in next st, (turn and K these 3 sts)4 times, turn, sl 1, K 2 tog, psso, turn and sl remaining st onto right-hand needle (POPCORN); K 5, make POPCORN in next st, K 4, sl 1, K 1, psso, work TWIST on next 2 sts, repeat from * across row. Row 9: * Work TWIST on next 2 sts, K 2 tog, K 13, sl 1, K 1, psso, work TWIST on next 2 sts, repeat from * across row. Row 11: * Work TWIST on next 2 sts, K 15, work TWIST on next 2 sts, repeat from * across row. Row 13: * Work TWIST on next 2 sts, K 2 tog, K 5, make POPCORN in next st, K 5, sl 1, K 1, psso, work TWIST on next 2 sts, repeat from * across row. Row 15: * Work TWIST on next 2 sts, K 2 tog, K 9, sl 1, K 1, psso, work TWIST on next 2 sts, repeat from * across row. Continue in this manner to dec 8 sts every other row until 28 sts remain. On next row P 2 tog across — 14 sts. Draw yarn through sts and pull up tightly.
FINISHING: Sew back seam. Steam lightly. POMPON: Cut a piece of cardboard to measure 2½ inches. Wind remaining yarn around cardboard. Slip off cardboard and tie in center. Cut loops at each end and shake vigorously. Trim cut ends. Sew to top of cap as shown.
