MATERIALS
BERNAT BERELLA GERMANTOWN (2 oz. balls) — 3
1 pair each BERNAT-Aero straight knitting needles Nos. 6 and 8 (Canadian Needles Nos. 8 and 6)
OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES THAT WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 set BERNAT-Aero d p needles No. 8 (Canadian d p Needles No. 6)

GAUGE: 11 sts = 2 inches; 6 rows = 1 inch

NOTE: When working ribbing, ALWAYS K in BACK of each K stitch.

PATTERN STITCH

Row 1: P 2, * K in BACK of next st, (R K st), P 2, sl 1, K 2, pass sl st over 2 K sts, P 2, R K st, P 2, P next 3 sts tog but do not drop off left-hand needle, K the same 3 sts tog and then P the same 3 sts tog and drop off left-hand needle, P 2, repeat from * across row.

Row 2: K 2, * P 3, K 2, P 1, K 2, P 1, y o, P 1, K 2, P 1, K 2, repeat from * across row.

Row 3: P 2, * R K st, P 2, K 3, P 2, repeat from * across row.

Row 4: K 2, * P 3, K 2, P 1, K 2, repeat from * across row.

Repeat these 4 rows for pattern stitch.

Using smaller needles, cast on 98 sts. Row 1: P 2, * K 1, P 2, K 3, P 2, repeat from * across row. Row 2: K 2, * P 1, K 2, P 3, K 2, repeat from * across row. Repeat these 2 rows for 5 inches. Change to larger straight needles and work even in pattern st until piece measures 12½ inches, ending with a right side row and dec 1 st each end of needle — 96 sts. SHAPE TOP: Starting with first R K st, divide sts onto 3 d p needles so that there are 32 sts on each needle. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Round 1: * R K st, P 3, repeat from * around. Repeat this round for 1 inch. FIRST DEC ROUND: Starting at the beg of a round, * R K st, P 1, P 2 tog, (R K st, P 3) 3 times, repeat from * around — 6 sts dec. Work in new pattern for 1 inch. 2ND DEC ROUND: * R K st, P 2, R K st, P 1, P 2 tog, (R K st, P 3) twice, repeat from * around — 6 sts dec. Work even in new pattern for 1 inch. 3RD DEC ROUND: * (R K st, P 2) twice, R K st, P 1, P 2 tog, R K st, P 3, repeat from * around — 6 sts dec. Work even in new pattern for 1 inch. 4TH DEC ROUND: * (R K st, P 2) 3 times, R K st, P 1, P 2 tog, repeat from * around — 6 sts dec. Work even in new pattern for 1 inch. 5TH DEC ROUND: * R K st, P 1, P next 2 sts tog (1 R K st eliminated), P 2, (R K st, P 2) twice, repeat from * around — 6 sts dec. Continue in this manner to dec 6 sts in a round every 1 inch until 12 sts remain in R K st, P 1 ribbing. Break off yarn, leaving an 8 inch end.

FINISHING: Pull end through remaining sts and draw up tightly. Sew back seam. Steam. Make a 6 inch tassel and sew to top of cap.
