Knit Hat Pattern #2158

These directions will fit most head sizes.

MATERIALS
BERNAT BLARNEY-SPUN (2 oz. balls) — 2
1 pair each BERNAT-Aero straight knitting needles Nos. 6 and 8 (Canadian Needles Nos. 8 and 6)
OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES THAT WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 BERNAT-Aero cable stitch needle
1 BERNAT-Aero crochet hook size G (Canadian Wool Crochet Hook No. 9)

GAUGE: 19 sts = 4 inches; 5 rows = 1 inch

NOTE: When working K 1, P 1 ribbing, always K in BACK of each K st.

PATTERN STITCH

Row 1: K 1, * skip next st, K next st, K skipped st (TWIST), P 2, sl next 3 sts onto cable needle and hold in BACK of work, K next st, then K 3 sts from cable needle, K 1, sl next st onto cable needle and hold in FRONT of work, K next 3 sts, K st from cable needle (CABLE), P 2, work TWIST on next 2 sts, P 16 *, repeat between *'s twice, K 1.

Row 2: P 1, * [P 3 tog; K, P, K all in next st] 4 times, P 2, K 2, P 9, K 2, P 2 *, repeat between *'s twice, P 1.

Row 3: K 1, * work TWIST on next 2 sts, P 2, K 9, P 2, work TWIST on next 2 sts, P 16 *, repeat between *'s twice, K 1.

Row 4: P 1,* [K, P, K all in next st; P 3 tog] 4 times, P 2, K 2, P 9, K 2, P 2 *, repeat between *'s twice, P 1.

Repeat these 4 rows for pattern stitch.

CAP: Using smaller needles, cast on 101 sts. Row 1: K 1, * P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row. Row 2: P 1, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches. Change to larger needles and work even in pattern st for 28 rows, ending with Row 4. Row 29: K 1, * work TWIST on next 2 sts, P 2, K 9, P 2, work TWIST on next 2 sts, P 16, repeat from * twice more, K 1. Row 30: Repeat Row 2 of pattern st, dec 1 st at end of row — 100 sts. SHAPE TOP: Rows 1 and 3: * Work TWIST on next 2 sts, P 2, repeat from * across row. Rows 2 and 4: * K 2, P 2, repeat from * across row. Row 5: * K 2 tog, K 16, sl 1, K 1, psso, repeat from * across row. Row 6 and all even rows: Purl. Row 7: * K 2 tog, K 14, sl 1, K l, psso, repeat from * across row. Row 9: * K 2 tog, K 12, sl 1, K 1, psso, repeat from * across row. Row 11: * K 2 tog, K 10, sl 1, K 1, psso, repeat from * across row. Row 13: * K 2 tog, K 3; K, P, K all in next st, (turn and K these 3 sts) 4 times, turn, sl 1, K 2 tog, psso, turn and sl remaining st onto right-hand needle (POPCORN); K 4, sl 1, K 1, psso, repeat from * across row. Row 15: * K 2 tog, K 6, sl 1, K 1, psso, repeat from * across row. Continue in this manner to dec 10 sts every other row until 30 sts remain. Draw yarn through these 30 sts and pull up tightly.

FINISHING: Sew back seam. Steam lightly. Using a dou­ble strand of yarn, make a ch 19 inches long. TASSEL: Cut a piece of cardboard to measure 8 inches. Wind remaining yarn around cardboard; tie loops together at one end. Slip off cardboard, fold yarn in half and tie securely ¾ inch from top. Trim ends. Fold chain in half; sew tassel to one end and sew other end to top of cap as shown. Turn back ribbing, if desired.
