MATERIAL:
For short socks: 2 balls Sock yarn 3 ply (1 oz. ball)
For long socks: 3 balls Sock yarn 3 ply (1 oz. ball)
1 set bone sock needles No. 1 and No. 2
PATTERN:
1st to 3rd round incl. * K6, P2, repeat from * all around.
4th and 5th rounds: * K2, P2, K2, P2, repeat from * all around.
6th and 7th rounds: * K1, P4, K1, P2, repeat from * all around.
8th and 9th rounds: * K2, P2, K2, P2, repeat from * all around.
Repeat these 9 rounds for pattern
GAUGE: 7 sts. = 1 inch
Cast on 64 sts. (24-24-16) with No. 1 needles. Join and work in ribbing K2, P2 for 4 inch. (2 inch. for short socks). Change to No. 2 needles and pattern. Work even until sock measures 11 inch. (7 inch. for short socks). Mark 1 P rib for center of back and slip 14 sts. from each side of center to one needle for heel (30 sts.). Divide the remaining 34 sts. on 2 needles for instep.
Work over heel needle only. 1st row: * slip 1, K1, repeat from * across row. 2nd row: P. Repeat these 2 rows for 26 rows (30 rows for larger sizes). Now turn heel with right side facing you, slip 1, K16, K2 tog. K1, turn, slip 1, P5, P2 tog. P1, turn, slip 1, K6, K2 tog. K1, turn, slip 1, P7, P2 tog. P1, turn, slip 1, K8, K2 tog. K1, turn. Continue to work this way having 1 more st. each row until 18 sts. are left on heel needle. K across heel needle. With another needle, pick up and K14 sts. (16 sts. for larger sizes) along side of heel (first needle), work across all instep sts. in pattern (2nd needle), pick up and K14 sts. (16 sts. for larger sizes) along other side of heel and K on to same needle 9 sts. of heel needle (3rd needle). Slip rem. 9 sts. of heel needle on to first needle, ending at center of sole. Decrease for instep. 1st round: K around. 2nd round: on first needle K to within 3 sts., K2 tog. K1, on 2nd needle work across in pattern, on 3rd needle K1, slip 1, K1 and pull slipped st. over the K st. K to end. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 60 sts. (64 sts. for larger sizes) in round. Work even without decreasing, keeping the instep sts. in pattern until sock measures from back of heel for size 10-8 inch., for size 10½-8½ inch., for size 11-9 inch., for size 11½-9½ inch., for size 12-10 inch., and for size 12½-10½ inch. (or 2 inch., less than desired length when finished). Discontinue pattern on instep needle and slip 2 sts. (1 st. for larger sizes) from each end of instep needle to first and 3rd needle. Start to decrease for toe. 1st round: K around. 2nd round: K to within 3 sts. of first needle, K2 tog, K1, on 2nd needle K1, slip 1, K1 and pull the slipped st. over the K st., K to within 3 sts., K2 tog. K1, on 3rd needle K1, slip 1, K1 and pull the slipped st. over the K st., K to end. Repeat these 2 rounds until 24 sts. are left in round for all sizes. Weave sts. together.
