On Two Needles

MATERIAL:
1 skein Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein)
1 pair knitting needles No. 8
2 stitchholders

Mittens are worked with double strand of yarn.

GAUGE: 4 sts. = 1 inch

Right mitten:
   Cast on 28 sts. 1st row: P14, K2, P8, K2, P2. 2nd row: K2, P2, slip next 2 sts. to an extra needle and hold in front of work, K next 2 sts., K the 2 sts. from extra needle, slip next 2 sts. to an extra needle and hold in back of work, K next 2 sts., K the 2 sts. from extra needle, P2, K14. 3rd row: Like first row. 4th row: K2, P2, K8, P2, K14. Repeat 3rd and 4th row once more, then repeat 3rd and 2nd row. Continue to work this way until 3 cables have been made, ending with 3rd row. Start to increase for thumb. First increase row: Work across 15 sts., inc. 1 st., K1, inc. 1 st. K to end. Work sts. back as they show. 2nd increase row: Work across 15 sts., inc. 1 st., K3, inc. 1 st., K to end. Work sts. back as they show. Continue to incr. this way on every K row having 2 more sts. between the increases until there are 9 sts. in thumb gore. Work across 15 sts. and place them on a holder, K across the 9 thumb sts., incr. 1 st. in last st. Place the remaining sts. on a holder. Work thumb on the 10 sts. in stock. st. for 10 rows ending with a P row. K2 tog. across next row. Break yarn and leave about 10 inch. Thread a tapestry needle with this end and run the yarn through the remaining sts. twice, pull the sts. tog. and sew up thumb on wrong side. Attach yarn and work sts. from first stitchholder, pick up and K 4 sts. across thumb base, work across remaining sts. Work in pattern until 8 cables are made from beginning ending with 3rd row. First decrease row for tip: K2, P2 tog., K8, P2 tog., K2, K2 tog., K8, K2 tog., K2. Work sts. back as they show. 2nd decrease row: K2, K2 tog., K6, K2 tog. K2, K2 tog., K6, K2 tog., K2, P back. 3rd decrease row: K2 tog. across entire row. Break yarn and leave about 16 inch. Finish tip of mitten as thumb. Sew up mitten on wrong side.

Left mitten:
   1st row: P2, K2, P8, K2, P14.
   Finish left mitten to correspond right mitten. Steam both lightly.
