Fernwood Cardigan Pattern #1112

Size 34

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Lustre Knitting Worsted, 13 skeins (1¼ oz. skeins).
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
9 buttons.

Gauge: 6 stitches make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, with No. 5 needles, cast on 99 sts. 1st row: * K 3, p 1 with the yarn over the needle twice (this makes a loose st), p 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 3. 2nd row: P 3, * k 2, sl the loose st as if to k, p 3. Repeat from * across. 3rd row: * K 3, sl the loose st as if to p, p 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 3. 4th row: * P 3, then k the loose st (3rd st on left needle) by inserting needle into back half of st on wrong side of work but do not slip it off, then k the 2 sts preceding the loose st in the ordinary manner, then drop the loose st from left hand needle. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 3. (The right side of work is the side with the twisted ribs.) These 4 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 4 rows, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until 81 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5 inches. Then, inc. 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there are 99 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 10 inches in all.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 81 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each row until 33 sts remain. Bind off.

Pocket Lining and Flap: It is wise to have these pieces made, ready to be worked into the Front. To make lining, with No. 5 needles, cast on 16 sts and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), for 2½ inches, then slip sts onto a stitch holder. Lay this piece aside. To make flap, with No. 3 needles, cast on 3 sts and work in moss st (on one row, k 1, p 1, alternately, and on next row, k over the p sts, and p over the k sts), increasing 1 st at end of each row until there are 16 sts on needle, then slip these sts onto a stitch holder.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, with No. 5 needles, cast on 53 sts and work as for Back, keeping the 8 sts at end of 1st row in moss st (this to be front edge), and decreasing 1 st every 2 inches at side edge twice (51 sts); at the same time, make a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge, after the first ½ inch and every 1½ inches thereafter, until 9 buttonholes in all are made. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 2 sts; then, on next row, cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off.) Work straight until piece measures 5 inches. Then increase 1 st at underarm side every 4th row until there are 58 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 10½ inches.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm side, bind off 7 sts, and continue across. Then, dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 44 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 2¾ inches. Next row: Starting at front edge, work in pattern across 1st 16 sts, bind off 16 sts, and continue across. Following row: Work in pattern across to within sts bound off, then, place the pocket sts behind the flap sts, having the wrong side of flap against the right side of pocket, and work in pattern, working together 1 st from each needle until all sts are worked off (thus joining flap to pocket), then, continue in pattern across. Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, starting at front edge, bind off 8 sts (thus starting neck shaping), and continue across. Then dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row 12 times; at the same time, when armhole measures same as armhole of Back, shape shoulder by binding off 4 sts at armhole edge, every other row until all sts are bound off.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, omitting buttonholes and reversing shapings.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, with No. 5 needles, cast on 39 sts and work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until there are 73 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 16 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then, dec. 1 st at end of each row until 16 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. With No. 3 needles, cast on 84 sts and work in moss st, increasing 1 st at beginning of each row until there are 104 sts on needle. Bind off.

Sew up underarm seams, easing in extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew collar all around neck edge, having center front bands extend beyond edges of collar. Sew pocket linings in place. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
