Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 11 balls (1 oz. balls), 2 balls of 1 contrasting color and 1 ball of another contrasting color; or Chadwick's Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 12 skeins (1¼ oz. skeins), 2 skeins of 1 contrasting color, and 1 skein of another contrasting color.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 2.
8 ball buttons.
Gauge: 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.
Back. Starting at bottom cast on 85 sts. 1st row: P 6, * k 3, p 11. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 3, p 6. 2nd row: K 5, * p 5, k 9. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 5, k 5. 3rd row: P 4, * k 7, p 7. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 7, p 4. 4th row: K 3, * p 9, k 5. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 9, k 3. 5th row: P 2, * k 11, p 3. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 11, p 2. 6th row: K 1, * p 13, k 1. Repeat from * across. 7th to 10th rows incl: Repeat 5th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd rows. These 10 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 10 rows, until piece measures 3¼ inches. (The side with the stockinette st background is right side of work.) Then, inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter, until there are 99 sts. Work straight until piece measures 8¼ inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 79 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 31 sts remain. Bind off.
Right Front: Starting at bottom, cast on 43 sts, and work in pattern across (this is underarm side). Hereafter, work as for Back, increasing 1 st at front edge of each row, (this to be curved edge of Front), until there are 51 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 3¼ inches. Hereafter, inc. 1 st at underarm side on next row and every 2 inches thereafter until there are 54 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 8¼ inches.
To Shape Armhole. Starting at underarm side, bind off 8 sts once. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 38 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, starting at front edge, bind off 6 sts (thus starting neck shaping) once, 2 sts every other row twice and dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row until 24 sts remain. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge bind off 3 sts every other row until all sts are worked off.
Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front reversing shapings.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom cast on 43 sts and work in pattern as for Back increasing 1 st at both ends of 1 row every inch until there are 73 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 17 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, 2 sts at beginning of each of the following 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 12 sts remain. Bind off.
Bands. With contrasting color, cast on 5 sts and work in garter st (k each row), until piece is long enough to go all around edges of blouse. Bind off. Make 2 more bands to go all around bottom of sleeves.
Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew bands in place as in illustration. Sew on buttons at equal distances apart on left band. Work a row of s c along right band, making ch-4 buttonloops to correspond with buttons.
Embroidery. Work as follows: With light color make a loop and fasten down at top with dark color. Then, with dark color, make a feather stitch at bottom of loop. Work thus in 6 center vertical stockinette sections of Front, alternating contrasting colors. (See stitch detail.)
