Materials:
Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 6 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 8 (5 mm. size).
2 buttons.

Gauge: 5 sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 59 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches. Next row: * K 2, k 2 tog., 0. Repeat from * across ending row with k 3. Following row: P across. Hereafter work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 10½ inches in all.

To Shape Armholes: Dec. 1 st at end of each row until 55 sts remain. Then drop 2nd st at beginning of each of next 2 rows (53 sts). Work straight until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, * bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then drop 2nd st at beginning of each of following 2 rows. Repeat from * until 21 sts remain. Then, with right side of work toward you, ** bind off 3 sts, drop next st. Repeat from ** until all sts are bound off.

Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 67 sts, and work as for back up to armhole shaping. To shape armhole, dec. 1 st at beginning of each of next 4 rows (63 sts remain). Then drop 2nd st at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at beginning of each of next 6 rows. Then drop 2nd st at beginning of each of next 2 rows (53 sts remain). Work straight until piece measures 1½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Next row: With right side of work toward you, k across 24 sts, drop next st, 0, k 3, drop next st, 0, k 24. Following row: P 21, k 11, p 21. Hereafter, work as before, keeping the center 11 sts in garter st (k 11 sts) until piece measures 2½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. With wrong side of work toward you, p 21, k 6, turn (thus starting front opening). Dec. 1 st and continue to work over these 26 sts only, keeping the 5 sts at front opening in garter st until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Starting at front opening, bind off 4 sts at beginning of next row, p next row, turn. Drop 2nd st and k across. Hereafter, dec. 1 st at neck edge each row 3 times (18 sts). To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 3 sts, drop next st and p across remaining sts. Following row: K across. Repeat these last 2 rows until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach yarn at base of front opening and work opposite side to correspond.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 42 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1½ inches, increasing 9 sts in the last row (51 sts). Then work as for Back until piece measures 5 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, dec. 1 st at beginning of each of next 4 rows. * Then drop the 2nd st at beginning of each of the following 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at beginning of each of next 6 rows. Repeat from * until 5 sts remain. Bind off remaining sts.

Collar. Starting at one end, cast on 18 sts and work in garter st (k each row) for 11 inches. Bind off. Pull each piece widthwise, so that drop stitches run to the top of waistband. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew collar all around neck edge. Sew on a button at both sides of front opening. Make a chain loop to fasten.
