"DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED
22 (24, 26) ounces Beige or color of your choice.
Knitting Needles: 1 pair No. 10½ or any size needles which will result in stitch gauge below.
1½ yards ½ inch elastic
Gauge: 5 stitches (sts) = 1 inch; 5 rows = 1 inch
Directions are given for size 12, sizes 14 and 16 are given in parentheses.
Back: Cast on 90 (94, 98) sts, Purl (P) 5 rows. Work in pattern as follows:
1st Row. Knit (K) 1, * work across next 4 sts as follows: skip 1st st, K 2nd st over 1st st and leave st on left hand needle, K the 1st st, slip (sl) both sts off left hand needle, skip 3rd st, insert needle from back to front between 3rd and 4th sts, K 4th st and leave st on left hand needle, K the 3rd st, sl both sts off, repeat from * across row to within last st, K last st.
2nd Row. P across row.
3rd Row. K 1, * work across next 4 sts as follows: skip 1st st, insert needle from back to front between 1st and 2nd st, K 2nd st and leave st on left hand needle, K the 1st st, sl both sts off, skip 3rd st, K 4th st over 3rd st and leave st on left hand needle, K 3rd st, slip both sts off, repeat from * across row to within last st, K last st.
4th Row. P across row.
Repeat these 4 rows until Back measures 14 (14½, 15) inches from beginning ending with 1st or 3rd row of pattern.
Shape Armhole: Keeping pattern even decrease 1 st at beginning and end of next row, then decrease 1 st at beginning and end of every other row 3 (3, 4) more times.
Work even on 82 (86, 88) sts until Armhole measures 7¾ (8, 8¼) inches from 1st decreasing point ending with 1st or 3rd row of pattern.
Shape Shoulders and Neckline: P 34 (36, 36), bind off 14 (14, 16) sts, P across remaining sts. Working across one side bind off 4 (6, 6) sts at beginning of next row (Armhole edge); then bind off 4 sts at same edge every other row 4 times; at the same time bind off 4 sts at Neck edge every other row twice; then bind off 3 sts at Neck edge every other row twice. Finish other side to correspond.
Front. Work same as Back.
Sleeves. Cast on 58 (60, 62) sts, Purl 5 rows.
Work even in pattern for 12 rows. Keeping pattern uniform increase 1 st at beginning and end of next row, then increase 1 st at beginning and end of every 6th row 3 (4, 5) more times. Work even in pattern on 66 (70, 74) sts until Sleeve measures 14 (14½, 15) inches from beginning or length desired to underarm. Decrease 1 st at beginning and end of next row, then decrease 1 st at beginning and end of every other row 3 (4, 5) more times, bind off remaining 58 (60, 62) sts.
Collar. Work Collar on the bias in ribbing of K 1, P 1. Cast on 4 sts and work 1 row. Keeping ribbing uniform increase 1 st at end of every row until there are 52 (54, 56) sts. Place a marker.
Next Row. Decrease 1 st at beginning of row and increase 1 st at end of row. Work 1 row even. Repeat last 2 rows until Collar measures 7 (7¼, 7½) inches from marker. Decrease 1 st at end of every row until 4 sts remain. Bind off.
Finishing. Block each section. Sew Underarm, Shoulder and Sleeve seams. Sew Sleeves in position. Sew the 2 shaped edges of Collar together. Sew Collar to neckline. Turn in outside edge about an ⅛ inch and stitch to wrong side. Work a casing in herringbone st inside lower edge of Sweater and lower edge of Sleeves. Lace elastic through casing.
