MATERIALS – Fleisher's Cheviot Zephyr; or Bear Brand or Bucilla Caledonian Zephyr; 3 balls. Worsted Yarn for Embroidery, 3 skeins each Red and Blue.
Fleisher's or Bucilla 14-inch White Knitting Needles, 1 pair each, Sizes 1 and 3.

IMPORTANT – Check your gauge first. These directions apply only when Fleisher's, Bear Brand or Bucilla Yarns are used as recommended.

GAUGE: 15 sts = 2 ins. 10 rows = 1 in.

MEASUREMENTS FOR FINISHED GARMENT

Bust 36 ins. Width across back at underarm 17 ¼ ins. Width across back at shoulders 13 ins. Length from lower edge to back neck edge 21 ¼ ins. Sleeves-Width below underarm 12 ins.

Entire sweater is worked in ribbing of k 2, p 2.

BACK-With size 1 needles, cast on 114 sts for lower edge. First row (wrong side)- * K 2, p 2; repeat from *, ending k 2.

2nd row- * P 2, k 2; repeat from *, ending p 2. Work 4 ins. Change to size 3 needles. Increase 1 st each side every 6th row 8 times (130 sts). Work even until 12 ins. from lower edge.

ARMHOLES-Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 10 times (98 sts). Work even until 6 ¾ ins. above underarm.

SHOULDERS-Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 14 rows (28 sts for each shoulder). Change to size 1 needles and work 1 in. even on 42 sts for neck ribbing. Bind off loosely.

FRONT-With size 1 needles, cast on 126 sts. First row (wrong side)- * P 2, k 2; repeat from *, ending p 2. 2nd row- * K 2, p 2; repeat from *, ending k 2. Work 4 ins. Change to size 3 needles. Work same as back to armhole (112 sts).

ARMHOLE, NECK AND SHOULDER SHAPING-Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 10 times (106 sts). Work even until 4 ½ ins. above underarm, ending on wrong side.

Work 42 sts and slip on holder, work 22 sts and slip on holder for neck ribbing, work across row. Decrease 1 st at neck edge every 2nd row 14 times, shaping shoulder as on back when armhole is same length as on back. Finish left side to correspond.

NECK RIBBING-With size 1 needles, pick up and k 24 sts on left neck edge, slip 22 sts from holder and work in ribbing, pick up and k 24 sts on right neck edge. Beginning next row p 2, k 2, work ribbing on these 70 sts for 1 in. Bind off.

SLEEVES-With size 1 needles, cast on 82 sts for lower edge. Work ribbing as on back for 1 in. Change to size 3 needles. Increase 1 st each side of next row and repeat increases every 6th row 3 times (90 sts). Work even until 3 ½ ins. from lower edge. Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 7 times (62 sts). Work even until 5 ¼ ins. above underarm. Decrease 1 st each side of next row and repeat decreases every 2nd row twice. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of each of next 6 rows, then 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off 38 sts.

FINISHING-Weave Worsted Stripes in each of 21 p ribs on right side of sleeve, weaving a single strand of red under every other row in center of first p st and a strand of blue under alternate rows in 2nd p st of same rib. Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with sleeve seam at center underarm, holding in fullness at top.
