MATERIALS Fleisher's Heathglen; or Bear Brand or Bucilla Tweedmoor, 4 skeins.
Fleisher's or Bucilla 14-inch Steel Knitting Needles, 1 pair each, Sizes 1 and 3.
Fleisher's or Bucilla Steel Crochet Hook, Size 3.
7 Buttons ½ inch diameter.
IMPORTANT Check your gauge first. These directions apply only when Fleisher's, Bear Brand or Bucilla Yarns are used as recommended.
GAUGE:
Size 3 needles-Rib Pattern 13 sts = 2 ins. 19 rows = 2 ins.
Size 3 needles-Pattern Stitch 15 sts = 2 ins. 10 rows = 1 in.
MEASUREMENTS FOR FINISHED GARMENT
Width across back at underarm 16 ¾ ins. Width across back at shoulders 14 ins. Width of each front at underarm 10 ins. Length from lower edge to back neck edge 19 ¾ ins. Sleeves-Width below underarm 12 ½ ins.
BACK-With size 1 needles cast on 109 sts for lower edge.
Begin Rib Pattern.
First row (right side)- * P 4, k 1, p 1, k 1, repeat from *, ending p 4.
2nd row-* K 4, p 1, k 1, p 1, repeat from *, ending k 4.
Repeat these 2 rows for pattern on back. Work 5 ins. even.
Change to size 3 needles and continue pattern until 12 ins. from lower edge.
ARMHOLES-Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 4 times (91 sts).
Work even until armhole measures 7 ins. Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 8 rows (28 sts bound off for each shoulder). Bind off 35 sts.
LEFT FRONT-Pattern is a multiple of 14 plus 5. With size 1 needles cast on 69 sts. K 1 row, p 1 row for 5 rows. K 1 row on wrong side for turning hem. Begin pattern.
First row (right side)-K 3, * add 1 st by making a loop on right hand needle (an increase), k 2, p 3, p 3 tog, p 3, k 2, add 1 st, k 1, repeat from * to within 11 sts of end, k 3; work p 1, k 1 over last 8 sts for front ribbed band. These 8 sts are worked in ribbing to neck edge.
2nd row-Work ribbing over first 8 sts; p 6, * k 7, p 7, repeat from *, ending p 6.
3rd row-K 4, * add 1 st, k 2, p 2, p 3 tog, p 2, k 2, add 1 st, k 3, repeat from *, ending k 4; work ribbing for 8 sts.
4th row-Work ribbing for 8 sts; p 7, * k 5, p 9, repeat from *, ending p 7.
5th row-K 5, * add 1 st, k 2, p 1, p 3 tog, p 1, k 2, add 1 st, k 5, repeat from *; work ribbing for 8 sts.
6th row-Work ribbing for 8 sts; p 8, * k 3, p 11, repeat from *, ending p 8.
7th row-K 6, * add 1 st, k 2, p 3 tog, k 2, add 1 st, k 7, repeat from *, ending k 6; work ribbing for 8 sts.
8th row-Work ribbing for 8 sts; p 9, * k 1, p 13, repeat from *, ending p 9.
9th row-K 2, p 2 tog, * p 3, k 2, add 1 st, k 1, add 1 st, k 2, p 3, p 3 tog, repeat from *, ending p 2 tog, k 2; work ribbing for 8 sts.
10th row-Work ribbing for 8 sts; p 2, k 4, p 7, * k 7, p 7, repeat from *, ending k 4, p 2.
11th row-K 2, p 2 tog, * p 2, k 2, add 1 st, k 3, add 1 st, k 2, p 2, p 3 tog, repeat from *, ending last repeat p 2 tog, k 2; work ribbing for 8 sts.
12th row-Work ribbing for 8 sts; p 2, k 3, p 9, * k 5, p 9, repeat from *, ending k 3, p 2.
13th row-K 2, p 2 tog, * p 1, k 2, add 1 st, k 5, add 1 st, k 2, p 1, p 3 tog, repeat from *, ending p 2 tog, k 2; work ribbing for 8 sts.
14th row-Work ribbing for 8 sts; p 2, k 2, * p 11, k 3, repeat from *, ending k 2, p 2.
15th row-K 2, p 2 tog, * k 2, add 1 st, k 7, add 1 st, k 2, p 3 tog, repeat from * , ending p 2 tog, k 2; work ribbing for 8 sts.
16th row-Work ribbing for 8 sts; p 2, * k 1, p 13, repeat from *, ending p 2.
Repeat these 16 rows for 5 ins. Change to size 3 needles and continue pattern until work measures 12 ½ ins. above turning row for hem (8 complete patterns), ending on wrong side.
ARMHOLE-Bind off 14 sts at beginning of next row for underarm (55 sts). Work even until armhole measures about 5 ¼ ins., ending with first row of 4th pattern above underarm.
Next row (2nd pattern row)-Work ribbing for 8 sts and place on strand of yarn; bind off next 6 sts, (being careful to keep pattern) work across row. Bind off 4 sts at front edge every 2nd row twice (33 sts). Work even until armhole measures 7 ins. Bind off 8 sts at shoulder edge every 2nd row 3 times. Bind off remaining 9 sts.
RIGHT FRONT-With size 1 needles cast on 69 sts. Work 6 rows as on left front.
Begin pattern. First row (right side )-K 1, p 1 for 8 sts (ribbed band); k 3, * add 1 st, k 2, p 3, p 3 tog, p 3, k 2, add 1 st, k 1; repeat from *, ending k 3. Continue to correspond to left front until 2 inches above turning ridge of hem, ending at front edge. Next row, work 3 sts, bind off 3 sts for buttonhole, work to end.
On the next row cast on 3 sts over the bound-off sts. Complete to correspond to left front binding off for underarm at beginning of a row worked from wrong side and repeating buttonhole every 2 ½ ins. 5 times. 6th buttonhole will be about 2 ¾ ins. below neck edge. Sew shoulder seams, holding in extra fullness of front shoulders.
SLEEVES-With size 1 needles cast on 81 sts for lower edge. Work rib pattern as on back for 2 ins. Change to size 3 needles. Work rib pattern until sleeve measures 5 ins.
Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 6 times. Work 4 ins. even. Decrease 1 st each side every row 12 times. Bind off 33 sts.
NECK BAND-With size 3 needles, working from right side, slip the 8 sts of right front band to needle pick up and k 27 sts to shoulder seam, 29 sts on back of neck and 27 sts on left front, slip the 8 sts of left front band to needle (99 sts). Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 row. Make 7th buttonhole. Work 5 rows even. Bind off.
FINISHING-Sew underarm seams, holding in extra length on front. Sew sleeve seams. Sew sleeves to armholes with sleeve seam at center underarm holding in extra fullness at top. Turn up front hems on wrong side and sew.
Work 1 row of s c on front edges, being careful to keep work flat. Steam. Sew buttons on left front. Use shoulder pads No. 3, see patternbook page.
