MATERIALS-Fleisher's Jumbolaine; or Bear Brand or Bucilla Kwiltee, 14 skeins.
1 pair Fleisher's or Bucilla 14-inch Cedarwood Knitting Needles, Size 11.
1 Fleisher's or Bucilla 6-inch White Crochet Hook, Size 8.
IMPORTANT-Check your gauge first. These directions apply only when Fleisher's, Bear Brand or Bucilla Yarns are used as recommended.
GAUGE: 10 sts = 3 ins. 5 rows = 1 in.
MEASUREMENTS FOR FINISHED GARMENT
Width across back at lower edge 18 ins.; each front 10 ins. Width across back at underarm 18 ins.; each front 10 ins. Length from lower edge to underarm 22 ins. (Box coat 15 ins.) Sleeves-Width below underarm 14 ins. Length from lower edge to underarm 17 ins.
Pattern is a multiple of 6 plus 1.
BACK-Cast on 61 sts for lower edge.
First row (right side)-P 3, * k 1, p 5; repeat from * across row, end k 1, p 3.
2nd row-K 2, * p 1, k 1, p 1, k 3; repeat from * across row, end k 2.
Repeat these 2 rows for pattern. Work even until 22 ins. from lower edge (box coat 15 ins.).
ARMHOLES-Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 4 times (45 sts). Rows on right side begin and end with seed st stripe. Work even until 7 ins. above underarm.
SHOULDERS-Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of the next 6 rows; 2 sts at beginning of each of the next 2 rows. Bind off 17 sts.
RIGHT FRONT-Pattern is a multiple of 6 plus 3. Cast on 33 sts.
First row-P 4, * k 1, p 5; repeat from * across row, end k 1, p 4.
2nd row-* K 3, p 1, k 1, p 1, repeat from * across row, end k 3.
Repeat these 2 rows until same length as back to underarm, ending on right side.
ARMHOLE-Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next row for underarm. Decrease 1 st at armhole edge every 2nd row 5 times (24 sts). Work even until 5 ins. above underarm.
NECK AND SHOULDER SHAPING-Decrease 1 st at front edge every row 8 times, then every 2nd row until 7 ins. above underarm. Bind off 4 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 3 times; 2 sts once, continuing to decrease at neck edge every 2nd row until 10 sts have been decreased in all.
LEFT FRONT-Work to correspond to right front, binding off and decreasing for underarm and shoulder at beginning of rows worked from right side.
SLEEVES-Pattern is a multiple of 6 plus 5. Cast on 35 sts for lower edge.
First row-P 2, * k 1, p 5; repeat from *, end k 1, p 2.
2nd row- K 1, * p 1, k 1, p 1, k 3; repeat from *, end k 1.
Repeat these 2 rows, increasing 1 st each side every 2 ½ ins. 6 times, being careful to keep pattern (47 sts). Work even until 17 ins. from lower edge.
Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm.
Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row 3 times; every 4th row 5 times (23 sts). Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Work remaining 11 sts even for 1 ½ ins. Bind off.
BREAST POCKETS-Cast on 15 sts for lower edge. Work pattern as on front for 20 rows. Bind off. (Make two for sports coat; for box coat make 4.)
HIP POCKETS-Cast on 21 sts for lower edge. Work pattern as on front for 30 rows. Bind off. (Make two for sports coat.)
FINISHING-Sew seams. Sew the 6 bound-off sts on each side of sleeve cap to the sides of the 1 ½ ins. worked even. Sew in sleeves with sleeve seam at center underarm, holding in extra fullness at top.
Crochet Band at Front edges and around Neck-Join yarn at lower edge of right front. Working from right side, work 80 s c to neck edge, 2 s c in corner st, continue s c around neck and down left front to lower edge.
2nd and 3rd row-Ch 1, turn, work 1 s c in each st of row below, working 2 s c at corners and decreasing 1 s c around neck at each shoulder seam. Working from right side, work 1 row of s c around each pocket, with 2 s c at each corner.
Steam coat and pockets separately.
Place hip pockets with stripes matching pattern of fronts (center seed st stripe at center stripe of fronts), lower edge of pocket 2 ins. from lower edge of coat. Place breast pockets 19 ½ ins. from lower edge, with front edges on a line with front edges of lower pockets. For box coat place lower pockets 2 ins. from lower edge; place upper pockets 12 ½ ins. from lower edge.

Sew Grosgrain Ribbon across shoulders and back of neck.
