MATERIALS Fleisher's Jumbolaine; or Bear Brand or Bucilla Kwiltee; 7 skeins.
Fleisher's or Bucilla 14-inch Cedarwood Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Sizes 10 and 13.
Fleisher's or Bucilla 6-inch White Crochet Hook, Size 8.
7 Crystal Buttons ¾ inch diameter.
IMPORTANT Check your gauge first. These directions apply only when Fleisher's, Bear Brand or Bucilla Yarns are used as recommended.
GAUGE: Size 13 needles 4 sts = 1 in. 5 rows = 1 in.
MEASUREMENTS FOR FINISHED GARMENT
Width across back at underarm 17 ins. Width across back at shoulders 12 ¾ ins. Width across each front at underarm 9 ¾ ins., including crochet band. Length from lower edge to back neck edge 19 ¼ ins. Sleeves -Width below underarm 13 ½ ins.
Pattern at lower edge is a multiple of 4.
BACK-With size 10 needles, cast on 56 sts for lower edge.
First row (right side)-P 1, * skip 1 st, k next st working into back of st, do not slip from needle, k skipped st working into back of st, drop both sts from needle (twist 2 sts), p 2, repeat from *, ending p 1.
2nd row-K 1, * skip 1 st, p next st, then p skipped st, drop both sts from needle (twist 2 sts), k 2; repeat from *, ending k 1. Repeat these 2 rows until 4 ins. from lower edge, ending on right side.
Increase row-K 1, * twist next 2 sts, k 1, increase 1 st by knitting into next st of row below, k 1; repeat from * 12 times, twist next 2 sts, k 1 (69 sts).
Change to size 13 needles, continue pattern having 3 p sts instead of 2 between twists. Work until 11 ½ ins. from lower edge.
NOTE: When binding off twist rib always k the 2 sts of rib tog.
ARMHOLES-Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows (61 sts). Work 1 row. Next row decrease 1 st each side. Work 1 row. Next row decrease 2 sts each side by working 3 sts tog. Decrease 1 st each side every 2nd row twice (51 sts).
Pattern rows will now begin and end with p 2 on right side, instead of p 1. Work even until 6 ½ ins. above underarm.
SHOULDERS-Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows, then bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows (13 bound-off sts for each shoulder; 16 sts used). Bind off 19 sts.
RIGHT FRONT-Pattern at lower edge is a multiple of 4 plus 2.
With size 10 needles. cast on 30 sts, Work in pattern as for lower edge of back, beginning and ending row with p 2 instead of p 1 (on right side).
Work same no. of rows as on back up to increase row.
Increase row-Increase 1 st in each p stripe between twist sts in same way as on back (36 sts). Change to size 13 needles and continue pattern having 2 p sts each side and 3 p sts between twist sts.
Work until same length as back to underarm, ending on right side.
ARMHOLE-Bind off 5 sts at beginning of next row for underarm as for back. Decrease at armhole edge as for back (26 sts). Work even until 5 ½ ins. above underarm, ending on wrong side at front edge.
NECK AND SHOULDER SHAPING-Bind off 5 sts at beginning of next row for neck edge. Keeping armhole edge even, decrease at neck edge every 2nd row as for armhole, until work measures 7 ins. above underarm. Continuing to decrease at neck edge until there are 4 decrease rows (5 sts decreased), bind off 5 sts at beginning of rows worked from armhole edge twice, then 6 sts once.
LEFT FRONT-Work to correspond to right front, binding off for underarm at beginning of a row worked from right side.
SLEEVES-With size 10 needles, cast on 44 sts for lower edge. Work pattern as for lower edge of back for 5 rows.
Increase row (wrong side)-Increase 1 st between twist sts as for increase row on back (54 sts). Change to size 13 needles; continue pattern with 3 p sts between twist sts, instead of 2. Work until 4 ins. from lower edge. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows for underarm. Decrease each side every 2nd row as for armhole of back (5 sts decreased each side; 36 sts).
Work even until 4 ins. above underarm.
Next row, decrease 1 st each side. Work 1 row even. Decrease 2 sts each side (twist stripe). Decrease 1 st each side every row 3 times. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Bind off 16 sts.
FINISHING-Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with sleeve seam at center underarm, holding in fullness at top.
BUTTON BAND-Join yarn at left front neck edge. Working from right side, work 49 s c to lower edge (about 3 s c in every 5 rows).
2nd row-Ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each st of row below. Fasten off.
BUTTONHOLE BAND-Join yarn on right front at lower edge. Working from right side, work 49 s c to neck edge.
2nd row-Ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each of first 2 sts, * ch 2, skip 2 sts for buttonhole, 1 s c in each of next 5 sts; repeat from * 6 times, ending 1 s c in each of the last 3 sts (7 buttonholes in all).
3rd row-Ch 1, turn, work 1 row s c up right front edge, around neck and down left front to lower edge. Fasten off.
Steam. Sew buttons on left front edge. Use shoulder pads No. 6, see patternbook page.
