REQUIREMENTS:
4-PLY LIGHT WEIGHT KNITTING WORSTED YARN
SIZES:   12 (14 - 16)
             11 ozs. (12 ozs. - 13 ozs.)
1 pair size 4 Aluminum knitting needles
1 pair size 7 Plastic knitting needles
Small amount contrasting color
10 buttons

Gauge: 4 sts = 1 inch.

PATTERN STITCH: Row 1: Purl 2, Knit 1, end Purl 2. Row 2: Knit 2, Purl 1, end Knit 2.

BACK: With No. 4 needles cast on 92 (96-100) sts. Work in ribbing Knit 1, Purl 1, for 3 inches. Increase evenly across the last row 3 (2-1) sts.

Change to No. 7 needles and work in pattern stitch. Increase 1 st each end of every 6th row until there are on the needle 109 (113-117) sts. Work even until piece measures 11½ (12-12½) inches from beginning.

Cast off 6 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows, then 1 st at beginning of every row 8 times 89 (93-97). Work even for 8 (8½-9) inches to shoulder. Bind off 9 (9-10) sts at beginning of next 6 rows. Bind off remaining sts for back of neck.

RIGHT FRONT: With No. 4 needles cast on 46 (48-50) sts and keeping first 8 sts in garter st (knit each row) work in ribbing for ½ inch. First buttonhole. Work across just 3 sts of garter stitch. Bind off next 2 sts. Work across remaining sts. On return row cast on 2 sts above bound off stitches. Continue to make buttonholes every 2 inches to neck.

When ribbing is complete change to No. 7 needles and work in pattern. Increase 1 st every 6th row until there are 58 (60-62) sts on needles. Continue until piece measures same as back to underarm. Bind off 6 sts at armhole edge once and decrease one st every other row 4 times. Work even until piece measures 6 (6½-7) inches straight up from armhole.

SHAPE NECK: Bind off 16 sts at neck edge once and decrease 1 st every row until 27 (27-30) sts remain. Work even until piece measures same as back. Bind off 9 (9-10) sts at beginning of next 3 rows. Work other side to correspond reversing shaping and omit buttonholes.

¾ SLEEVES: Cast on 56 (56-60) sts with No. 4 needles. Work in ribbing for 1½ inches. Increase across last row 6 sts. Change to No. 7 needles and work in pattern. Increase 1 st each side of every 6th row until there are on the needle 80 (80-84) sts. Work even until piece measures 10 (10½-11) inches. Bind off 6 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.

Bind off 1 st at beginning of every row until 38 sts remain.

Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 6 rows. Bind off remaining stitches.

COLLAR: With No. 4 needles cast on 125 sts. Work in ribbing until piece measures 2½ inches. Bind off loosely. Block all pieces. Assemble sweater.

SMOCKING: Starting at 4th button down from top using a tapestry needles and contrasting color; tie together, gathering 1st rib and 3rd rib as illustrated. Continue every 12th row. Work same in back for yoke.
