MATERIALS:

6 oz. green knitting worsted
1 oz. white knitting worsted
1 pair No. 3 needles
1 pair No. 5 needles
Knitting Chart

GAUGE:

5 1/2 stitches = 1 inch
7 rows = 1 inch

FRONT:

With No. 3 needles and green yarn cast on 62 stitches and work in ribbing of knit 1, purl 1, for 14 rows. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette stitch. Work 2 rows in green, then attach white yarn and work pattern as indicated on chart. When you have completed the pattern, break white yarn, leaving several inches for finishing. Continue in stockinette stitch until work measures 7 inches above ribbing or desired length to underarm. Bind off 3 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows and then decrease 1 stitch each end of needle on next, 2 knit rows (52 stitches left).

On next knit row, start neck opening as follows: Knit 28 and put remaining 24 stitches on a stitch holder. * Turn, knit 5, purl to end of row. Turn and knit back. * Repeat from * to * for 14 rows, making a buttonhole in garter stitch band at neck opening on 6th and 12th rows. (To make a buttonhole, knit 1st stitch of band, knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 2. On next row knit over these 5 stitches.)

On next row, at neck edge, work 10 stitches, put these 10 stitches on a stitch holder and leave. Work to end of row. Then decrease 1 stitch at neck edge 3 times. Work even on remaining 15 stitches for 6 rows, then place these 15 stitches on a stitch holder and leave.

Work second half to correspond, but first cast on 4 stitches at inner edge for underlap. Omit buttonholes. Note: If desired, reverse neck opening for a girl's sweater.

BACK:

Work as front, omitting neck opening and neck shaping. Weave shoulders to back, keeping center 22 stitches of back on a stitch holder for neck. (See General Directions.)

NECK BAND:

Using No. 3 needles and holding right side of work toward you, pick up and knit the 10 stitches of right front, then 7 stitches over the right shoulder, then the 22 stitches of back, then 7 stitches over left shoulder, and then 10 stitches of left front (56 stitches). Work in ribbing of knit 1, purl 1, for 6 rows, making a buttonhole over the others on the 3rd row.

SLEEVES:

Using No. 5 needles, pick up 56 stitches around armhole and work even in stockinette stitch for 16 rows. Then decrease 1 stitch each end of needle on next row and every 6th row thereafter until 40 stitches remain. Attach white yarn and work first 3 rows of pattern as shown on chart, starting on a knit row. Break white yarn. In next knit row decrease 1 stitch each end of needle. Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of knit 1, purl 1, for 12 rows. Bind off.
