GAUGE:

5 1/2 stitches = 1 inch
7 rows = 1 inch

BACK:

With No. 3 needles and brown yarn, cast on 64 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 16 rows. Change to No. 5 needles and knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Continuing in stockinette stitch, on next row attach tan yarn and knit 1 brown, 1 tan, 1 brown, 1 tan, etc., across the row, ending with knit 1 tan. Next row purl 1 brown, 1 tan, 1 brown, 1 tan, etc., across the row, ending with purl 1 tan. Next row knit 3 brown, 1 tan, 3 brown, 1 tan, etc., across the row, ending with knit 1 tan. Then work 2 rows in brown. Next row (a purl row) purl 1 brown * 1 tan, 3 brown * and repeat from * to * across the row ending with purl 2 brown. Work 2 rows in brown. Next row * knit 1 tan, 3 brown * and repeat from * to * across row. These last 6 rows make polka dot pattern and the balance of the back is worked in this pattern.

Work even in polka dot pattern for 44 rows. Then bind off 3 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows and then decrease 1 stitch at beginning of next 6 rows (52 stitches remain). Work even for 24 rows and then take these 52 stitches off on a stitch holder and leave.

FRONT:

Each front has a 5 stitch border in garter stitch (knitting every row) above the ribbing. For a boy's sweater make buttonholes on left front and for a girl's sweater on the right front. Make first buttonhole in 7th row of ribbing, and every 14th row thereafter. To make a buttonhole, knit 1, knit 2 together, yarn over, knit remaining 2 stitches. On next row knit over these 5 stitches. The last buttonhole is made above the others in neck ribbing.

For the left front, using No. 3 needles and brown yarn, cast on 36 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 16 rows. Change to No. 5 needles and knit across row. Next row knit 5, then purl to end of row . Always knitting the 5 stitches at front edge, attach tan yarn and follow chart for pattern. Make decreases for armhole as shown on chart and to correspond with back.

On 16th row above first armhole decrease, knit 5 (for band), purl 5 and take these 10 stitches off on a stitch holder and leave. Purl to end of row. Decrease 1 stitch at beginning of next 3 purl rows (at neck edge). Work even for 9 rows. Take remaining 17 stitches off on a stitch holder and leave.

Work right front to correspond, following chart for pattern and decreases.

Weave shoulders to back (see General Directions) leaving 18 stitches on stitch holder at center back for neck.

NECK:

With No. 3 needles, holding right side of work toward you, pick up and knit the 10 stitches of right front, then 10 stitches over right shoulder, then 18 stitches at center back, then 10 stitches over left shoulder, and finally 10 of left front. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 5 rows, making buttonhole over others in 3rd row of ribbing. Bind off.

SLEEVES:

With right side of work toward you and using No.5 needles, pick up 52 stitches around armhole. Work 2 rows in brown, and then begin polka dot pattern and work straight for 16 rows. Next row and every 6th row thereafter decrease 1 stitch at beginning and end of row, until 40 stitches remain and sleeve measures as nearly 7 3/4 inches as possible, ending with a polka dot row. Next row work 1 tan, 1 brown, 1 tan, 1 brown, etc., to end of row, ending with 1 brown. Next row work 1 tan, 1 brown, 1 tan, 1 brown, etc., to end of row. Break tan yarn, leaving several inches for finishing. Work 2 rows in brown. Then change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 15 rows. Bind off.
