MATERIALS:

3 oz. 3 ply dark red sports wool for background
1 oz. 3 ply gray sports wool

1 set No. 3 sock needles
1 pair No. 4 needles
Knitting Chart

GAUGE:

6 stitches = 1 inch
9 rows = 1 inch

FRONT:

With No. 3 needles and background color, cast on 64 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 14 rows. Change to No. 4 needles, and work in stockinette stitch for rest of front, increase 1 stitch each end of needle on first row. On next knit row, attach gray yarn and follow chart. When you have completed the pattern, break gray yarn, leaving several inches for finishing. Work even for 20 rows or desired length to underarm. Then bind off 4 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows; then decrease 1 stitch at each end of needle on next 3 knit rows, leaving 52 stitches on needle. * Divide these, putting 26 stitches on stitch holder, and work on remaining 26 stitches. Decrease 1 stitch at neck edge on 2nd row and every 4th row thereafter until 17 stitches remain. Work even until work measures 4 inches up from underarm. Put the 17 stitches on a stitch holder and leave. Work the other side to correspond.

BACK:

Work as for front to *. Continue in stockinette stitch until back measures same as front, ending with a purl row.

Weave fronts to back, keeping center 18 stitches of back on a stitch holder for neck.

NECK:

Holding right side of work toward you and using No. 3 sock needles and gray yarn, start at center front and pick up and knit 25 stitches from point of V to shoulder. On second sock needle knit across the 18 stitches of the back. On third sock needle pick up and knit 25 stitches on left side to point of V. Work back and forth instead of round and round (working from center front to center front) in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 6 rows. Bind off loosely.

Stitch edge of right ribbing to left front and edge of left ribbing to right front, crossing the ribbing.

Sew side seams.

ARMHOLES:

With right side of work toward you and using gray yarn and No. 3 sock needles, pick up and knit 64 stitches around armhole. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 6 rows, working round and round. Bind off loosely.
