GAUGE:

6 1/2 stitches = 1 inch
9 rows = 1 inch

BACK AND FRONT:

With number 2 needles and white yarn, cast on 68 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 16 rows. Change to No. 3 needles and knit next row, increasing 1 stitch (to 69 stitches). Beginning with a purl row work next 3 rows in stockinette stitch in white. Next row (a knit row) attach gray yarn and follow chart. Attach red yarn at beginning of second row (a purl row) and continue to follow chart. Break red yarn and then knit next row. Break gray yarn. Work 3 rows in white, and then continue to follow chart for mice. Break gray yarn after you have completed mice, work 3 rows in white, and then follow chart for rest of front, making decreases for armholes as indicated on chart.

For neck opening: On the first knit row after last armhole decrease (row 57) divide as follows: Knit 26, knit 2 together. Put remaining 27 stitches on a holder and leave. Continue to work in pattern, making decreases at neck edge as shown. When you have completed left side, put remaining 16 stitches on a holder and leave. Make right side to correspond, following chart.

Back: Follow chart for front, omitting neck opening.

Weave back and front together at shoulders (see General Directions), keeping 23 middle stitches of the back on a holder for neck. Pick up an extra stitch to make 24 stitches for center back on holder.

NECK:

Using sock needles and white yarn, and starting at center front, pick up and knit 20 stitches from point of V to shoulder, the 24 stitches from center back, and 20 stitches on left side to point of V. Work back and forth instead of round and round (working from center front to center front) in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 6 rows. Bind off loosely. Stitch edge of right ribbing to left front and edge of left ribbing to right front, crossing the ribbing.

ARMHOLES:

With right side of work toward you and using white yarn, pick up and knit 68 stitches around armhole on No.2 sock needles. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 6 rows. Bind off loosely.
