Knitting Needles: One pair each "Boye" Sizes 5 and 6, one crochet hook Size 0, and one "Hiawatha" blunt-end tapestry needle

Gauge: On Size 6 needles before smocking - 11 sts to 2 inches; 7 rows to 1 inch

Note: Directions are for a 35(35¼-35½-35¾) inch dress measured from back of neck to hem allowing 1 inch for blocking. For longer or shorter dress make adjustment before first dec row.

Front: With Size 5 needles and A - cast on 181(183-185-187). ** P 1 row and K 1 row for 8 rows. Mark each end of last row. Change to Size 6 needles.
Row 1 - Right side: P 3(4-5-6), K 1, * P 5, K 1, repeat from * to last 3(4-5-6) sts, P to end.
Row 2: K 3(4-5-6), P 1, * K 5, P 1, repeat from * to last 3(4-5-6) sts, K to end.
Row 3: P.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row 1.
Row 6: K. Repeat last 6 rows to about 3¼ inches above markers, end with Row 5.

Dec Row: K 4(5-6-7), * K 2 tog, K 10, repeat from * across to last 9(10-11-12) sts, K 2 tog, K to end.
Continue in pat as follows:
Row 1: P 3(4-5-6), K 1, * P 4, K 1, P 5, K 1, repeat from * to last 8(9-10-11) sts, P 4, K 1, P to end.
Row 2: K 3(4-5-6), P 1, * K 4, P 1, K 5, P 1, repeat from * to last 8(9-10-11) sts, K 4, P 1, K to end.
Row 3: P.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row
Row 6: K. Repeat last 6 rows to about 8½ inches above markers, end with Row 5.

Dec Row: K 9(10-11-12), * K 2 tog, K 9, repeat from * to last 14(15-16-17), K 2 tog, K to end.
Continue in pat as follows:
Row 1: P 3(4-5-6), K 1, * P 4, K 1, repeat from * to last 3(4-5-6) sts, P to end.
Row 2: K 3(4-5-6), P 1, * K 4, P 1, repeat from * to last 3(4-5-6) sts, K to end.

Row 4: Repeat Row 2.

Row 6: K. Repeat last 6 rows to about 13½ inches above markers, end with Row 5.

Dec Row: K 6(7-8-9), K 2 tog, * K 8, K 2 tog, repeat from * to last 4(5-6-7), K to end.

Row 6: K. Repeat these 6 rows to about 18 inches, end with Row 5.

Dec Row: K 10(11-12-13), K 2 tog, K 7, repeat from * to last 10(11-12-13) sts, K 2 tog, K to end. **
Work on the 123(125-127-129) sts in pat as follows:
Row 1: P 3(4-5-6), K 1, * P 3, K 1, repeat from * to last 3(4-5-6) sts, P to end.
Row 2: K 3(4-5-6), P 1, * K 3, P 1, repeat from * to last 3(4-5-6) sts, K to end.
Row 3: P.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row 1.
Row 6: K. Repeat last 6 rows to 27 inches or desired length to underarm, end on wrong side. Width across is 22½(22¾-23¼-23½ ) inches.

Armholes: Careful to keep pat bind off 3 at beg of next 2 rows. Work on the 117(119-121-123) sts to 5(5¼-5½-5¾) inches above underarm, end with Row 1 or 4.

Neck: Work across 31(32-33-34) and sl them to a holder, bind off center 55, work to end. Work on the 31(32-33-34) sts to 7(7¼-7½-7¾) inches above underarm.

Shoulder: Bind off 16(16-17-17) at armhole edge 1(2-1-2) times then on Sizes 10 and 14 Only, bind off 15(16) at same edge once. Starting at neck, work other side to correspond.

Back: With Size 5 needles and A - cast on 169(171-173-175). Work same as on front from ** to ** having 2 pats less. Continue in pat as on front on the 115(117-119-121) sts to same length as on front to underarm end on wrong side. Width across is 21(21¼ -21¾-22) inches.

Armholes: Careful to keep pat bind off 3 at beg of next 2 rows. Work on the 109(111-113-115) sts to about 2 inches above underarm, end with Row 5.

Dec Row: K 1(2-3-4), * K 2 tog, K 2, repeat from * to last 4(5-6-7) sts, K 2 tog, K 2(3-4-5). Work on the 82(84-86-88) sts, having 1 less st between "ridges," to 4(4¼-4½-4¾) inches above underarm, end on right side.

Divide for Opening: Work across 41(42-43-44) and sl them to a holder, work to end. Change to Size 5 needles and work to 7(7¼-7½-7¾) inches above underarm.

Shoulder: Bind off 11(11-11-12) sts at armhole edge 2(1-1-2) times then on Sizes 12 and 14 Only bind off 12 sts at same edge once. Bind off. Work other side to correspond.

Sleeves: With Size 6 needles and A - cast on 65(65-73-73). Work in pat as follows:
Row 1: K 1, * P 3, K 1, repeat from * across.
Row 2: P 1, * K 3, P 1, repeat from * across.
Row 3: P.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Repeat Row 1.
Row 6: K. Repeat these 6 rows for pat working to 5(5-6-5) inches. Working added sts in pat, inc 1 each side on next row.

On Sizes 10(12-16) Only, repeat inc every inch 1(2-1) times more. All Sizes work on the 69(71-75-77) sts to 16½ inches or desired length to underarm, end on wrong side. Width across sleeve is 12½(13-13½-14) inches.

Sleeve Cap: Careful to keep pat bind off 3 at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 each side every other row until 45(45-47-47) sts rem. Dec 1 each side every row 4 times. Bind off 3 at beg of next 8 rows. Bind off rem'ing sts.

Smocking: With tapestry needle and contrasting color - work from right to left on right side of work, start at left armhole about 1¾(2-2¼-2½) inches straight above underarm, bring needle up in P st in 3rd(3rd-2nd-2nd) "ridge" from side edge, draw 3rd(3rd-2nd-2nd) and 2nd(2nd-1st-1st) "ridges" together, work another overcast stitch in same place then bring up needle in P st of 5th(5th-4th-4th) "ridge" and draw 5th(5th-4th-4th) ridges tog as before, continue in this way across.

Having rows of smocking about ½ inch apart draw together alternating ridges on every other row of smocking using P sts as a guide. Width across shoulders after smocking should be about 12½(12¾ -13-13¼) inches. Work 3 rows of smocking on sleeves in same way about 1 inch above start.

Sew shoulder seams. With A - crochet 1 row of sc around neck making a buttonhole at back opening. Sew in sleeves.
Sew sleeve and underarm seams. Hem at markers and sew in place.
