Size 34
Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 7 skeins (1¾ ounce skeins). Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 5 (3¾ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 7 (4¾ mm. size). 5 buttons, 1 inch in diameter.
Gauge: Without stretching work, and with ribs lying closely together, 3 ribs (6 sts) make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.
Entire jacket is worked in ribbing.
Back. Starting at bottom, with No. 7 needles cast on 80 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 3½ inches. Then change to No. 5 needles and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2½ inches. Change to No. 7 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, until work measures 14 inches from beginning.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of every other row for 3 times (64 sts remain). Hereafter, work straight until work measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 6 rows. Then bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows (20 sts remain). Bind off tightly these 20 sts for back of neck. Break off.
Right Front. Starting at bottom, with No. 7 needles cast on 48 sts and work as for back, making a buttonhole 4 sts in from one edge (this to be front edge) 4¾ inches from beginning (center of k 1, p 1). (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts, and on the next row cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.) Then work in pattern, making a buttonhole every 3¾ inches thereafter, shaping armhole same as for back but on opposite edge, until 5 buttonholes are made. Then work straight until armhole measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, starting at front edge, bind off first 6 sts, and work in pattern across. Hereafter, bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row at neck edge for 5 times, in the meantime, when there are 32 sts remaining on needle, start shaping shoulder as for back until all sts are bound off.
Left Front. Work as for right front, omitting buttonholes.
Sleeves. Starting at wrist, with No. 5 needles cast on 44 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches. Change to No. 7 needles and work in ribbing of k, 2, p 2, for 2 inches. * Increase 1 st at both ends of next row. Work in pattern straight for 1 inch. Repeat from * until there are 64 sts on needle. Then work in pattern straight until sleeve measures 17 inches from beginning. To shape top of sleeve, decrease 1 st at both ends of each row until 54 sts remain. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 20 sts remain. Now decrease 1 st at both ends of each row until 12 sts remain. Bind off.
Collar. With No. 5 needles, cast on 60 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 3½ inches. Bind off.
Pockets. With No. 5 needles, cast on 24 sts and work as for collar for 2 inches. Bind off tightly. Make 1 more pocket same as this (these are lower pockets). Make 2 more pockets, each 1½ inches deep, for upper pockets. After all pieces have been blocked, sew up side and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Pin collar to neck edge, 1 inch in from right front edge and to within 1 inch from left front edge, and sew in place. Sew on pockets slantwise as in illustration, easing in bottom of pocket. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
