Smocked Twins Set Pattern #1009M

Size 34

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Sports Yarn, 21 balls (1 ounce balls). Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size). Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4. 1 dozen buttons, ¾ inch diameter.

Gauge: Without stretching work, 10 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

BLOUSE

Back. Starting at bottom of waistband, cast on 128 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 3 inches, increasing 1 st at both ends of last row (130 sts). Then continue for body of blouse as follows: 1st row: * K 1, p 2, repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 2nd row: * P 1, k 2, repeat from * across, ending row with p 1. Repeat these 2 rows alternately, increasing 1 st at both ends of 1 row after every 2 inches for 3 times (136 sts on needle). Then work straight (without increasing) until work measures 8½ inches from top of waistband.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 114 sts remain on needle. Then continue with yoke pattern to get the smocking effect as follows:

Yoke. 1st row: With right side of work towards you (the side with the k 1 ribs is the right side of work), p 1, * keeping yarn in front (towards you) sl the next 4 sts (that is the k 1, p 2, k 1) on to right hand needle, then pass yarn around these 4-sl sts as if to k, then sl these 4 sts back on to left hand needle, drawing the yarn snugly around these 4 sts. Then k 1, p 2, k 1 thus working off these 4 sts (1 group of smocking made). P next 2 sts, then repeat from * across, ending row with p 1. Thus a row of smocking is worked. 2nd row: K 1, * p 1, k 2, repeat from * across, ending row with p 1, k 1. 3rd row: P 1, * k 1, p 2, repeat from * across, ending row with k 1, p 1. 4th, 5th and 6th rows: Repeat the 2nd, 3rd and 2nd rows. 7th row: P 1, k 1, p 2, then repeat from * of 1st row, thus working a row of smocking, ending row with p 2, k 1, p 1. 8th to 12th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately. These 12 rows constitute yoke pattern. Repeat these 12 rows until work measures 6½ inches from the first row of armhole shaping. Then, to shape shoulders, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each row (working remaining sts in pattern) until 42 sts remain on needle. Continue for neckband, working over these 42 sts in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1 inch. Bind off loosely. This completes back.

Front. Starting at bottom cast on 140 sts and work same as for back to armhole shaping (148 sts).

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of each row, until 120 sts remain on needle. Then work in yoke pattern as for back. When work measures 5 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, start shaping for neck as follows: Next row: Work in pattern across first 48 sts, bind off next 24 sts (for front neck), work remaining 48 sts. Hereafter, work over these 48 sts, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every other row for 12 times (keeping armhole edge straight), until work measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then to shape shoulders, bind off 4 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are bound off. Work other side to correspond. To work front neckband, with right side of work towards you, pick up 52 sts around neck edge and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1 inch. Bind off loosely.

Sleeves. Starting at band, cast on 92 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1¼ inches, increasing 1 st at both ends of last row. Then work in yoke pattern, increasing at both ends of every other row until there are 110 sts on needle. When sleeve measures 2½ inches from top of band, start shaping by binding off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of every row until 18 sts remain on needle. Bind off these 18 sts.

Sew up side and shoulder seams, leaving a 2 inch opening on shoulder seam at each side of neck. Sew sleeve seams and sew in place. With crochet hook, work a row of s c around neck opening, making 2 ch-7 loops (for buttonholes) at front edge. Sew buttons on back edge to correspond. Work other opening at shoulder in same way.

JACKET

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 130 sts. 1st row: * K 1, p 2, repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 2nd row: * P 1, k 2, repeat from * across, ending row with p 1. Repeat these 2 rows alternately, increasing 1 st at both ends of 1 row every 2 inches for 6 times (142 sts). Then work without increasing until work measures 13 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 114 sts remain on needle. Work straight until work measures 4 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then continue with yoke pattern of blouse until work measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Shape shoulders as for blouse back until 42 sts remain on needle. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 75 sts. 1st row: K 10, p 1, * k 1, p 2, repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 2nd row: * P 1, k 2, repeat from * across, ending row with k 1, p 10. 3rd to 6th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows alternately, working the 10 sts at one edge in stockinette, up to neck shaping (this to form band for center front edge). 7th row: K 10, p 1, and keeping yarn in front, over next 28 sts work 5 groups of smocking as in yoke, then p 2, k 1 alternately across, ending row with k 1. 8th to 12th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows alternately. 13th row: K 10, p l, k 1, p 2, and keeping yarn in front, over next 28 sts work 5 groups of smocking as in yoke, then p 2, k 1 alternately across, ending row with k 1. These last 12 rows (2nd to 13th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Repeat these 12 rows, increasing 1 st at underarm edge after every 2 inches, and on the same row as the increase is made, make a buttonhole in the center front band. (To make a buttonhole, bind off the center 4 sts of center front band and on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.) Continue in this manner until work measures 13 inches (81 sts).

To Shape Armhole: With wrong side of work toward you, bind off 8 sts at beginning of row, and continue across in pattern. Then bind off 1 st at armhole edge every row, keeping front edge straight (but continuing with buttonholes up to neck shaping) until 64 sts remain on needle. Work over these 64 sts until work measures 4 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row of smocking pattern, continue smocking across the remainder of row. Hereafter, work in yoke pattern only (except the 10 sts of band which is continued in stockinette, as before), until work measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending row at front edge. To shape neck edge, on next row bind off the 10 sts of front band, work in yoke pattern across. Then decrease 1 st at neck edge every row for 18 times, but in the meantime, when work measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 4 sts every other row at shoulder edge, until all sts are bound off.

Left Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 75 sts. 1st row: * K 1, p 2, repeat from * across, ending row with k 1, p 1, k 10. 2nd row: P 10, k 1, * p 1, k 2, repeat from * across, ending row with p 1. 3rd to 6th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows alternately, working the 10 sts at one edge in stockinette (as for right front). 7th row: K 1, p 2, alternately across the next 36 sts, then, keeping yarn in front, over next 28 sts work 5 groups of smocking as in yoke, then p 1, k 10. Hereafter, work to correspond with right front, omitting buttonholes, and reversing armhole and neck shaping. Sew up side and shoulder seams.

Neck Band. With right side of work towards you, starting immediately beyond center band of right front (10 sts of stockinette), pick up 88 sts, working along neck line to shoulder, across back and down other side to within center band of left front. Then work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1 inch. Bind off.

Sleeves. Starting at wrist, cast on 70 sts. 1st row: * K 1, p 2, repeat from * across, ending with k 1. 2nd row: * P 1, k 2, repeat from * across, ending with p 1. Repeat these 2 rows alternately throughout sleeve. When work measures 1 inch, increase 1 st at both ends of next row and at both ends of every 8th row for 8 times, then every 6th row until there are 120 sts on needle. Then work straight (without increasing) until sleeve measures 18 inches. Then to shape top, bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of each of next 8 rows. Bind off 1 st at end of each row until 72 sts remain on needle. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of each row until 18 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in jacket. Attach yarn at neck edge of left front and work a row of s c across the center band (10 sts) and down center front band. Work right front edge to correspond. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
