20 (21, 23, 25) ounces Cocoa or Beige.
2 (2, 2, 2) ounces Black or colors of your choice.
Knitting Needles: 1 pair each No. 6 and No. 8 or any size needle which will result in stitch gauge below.
Gauge: 5 sts = 1 inch; 7 rows = 1 inch.
1½ yds.—1 inch grosgrain ribbon.
¾ yd.—¼ inch grosgrain ribbon.
Buttons as required.
Directions are given for size 12. Sizes 14, 16 and 18 are given in parentheses.
Back: With Cocoa on No. 6 needles cast on 96 (102, 108, 114) stitches (sts).
Work in stockinette st Knit (K) 1 row, Purl (P) 1 row for 6 rows ending with a P row.
Next 2 Rows. P across each row to form hemline.
Change to No. 8 needles and work in pattern as follows:
1st Row. (Right Side). K across row.
2nd Row. P across row.
3rd Row. K 1 (2, 1, 2) sts, * keeping yarn in back of work, slip (sl) 2 sts as if to P, K 2 sts, repeat from * across row to within last 3 (4, 3, 4) sts ending with yarn in back of work, sl 2 sts as if to P, K 1 (2, 1, 2) sts.
4th Row. P 1 (2, 1, 2) sts, * keeping yarn in back of work, sl 2 sts as if to P, P 2 sts, repeat from * across row to within last 3 (4, 3, 4) sts ending with yarn in back of work, sl 2 sts as if to P, P 1 (2, 1, 2) sts.
5th and 6th Rows. Repeat 1st and 2nd rows.
7th Row. K 3 (4, 3, 4) sts, * keeping yarn in back of work, sl 2 sts as if to P, K 2, repeat from * across row to within last 5 (6, 5, 6) sts ending with yarn in back of work, sl 2 sts as if to P, K 3 (4, 3, 4) sts.
8th Row. P 3 (4, 3, 4) sts, * keeping yarn in back of work, sl 2 sts as if to P, P 2, repeat from * across row to within last 5 (6, 5, 6) sts ending with yarn in back of work, sl 2 sts as if to P, P 3 (4, 3, 4) sts. These 8 rows form the pattern. Work even in pattern until Back measures 15 (15¼, 15½, 16) inches from beginning or length desired to underarm, ending on wrong side of work.
Shape Armholes: Keeping pattern uniform, bind off 6 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.
Bind off 3 (3, 4, 5) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st on each side every other row 4 (5, 6, 6) times.
Work even until Armholes measure 7½ (8, 8¼, 8½) inches from 1st decreasing point ending on wrong side of work.
Shoulders: Bind off 10 (11, 11, 12) sts at beginning of each of the next 2 rows. Bind off 13 (13, 14, 14) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Place remaining 24 (26, 26, 28) sts on a holder for back of Neck.
Left Front: With Black on No. 6 needles, cast on 5 sts for all sizes, drop Black, on same needle with Cocoa cast on 48 (50, 56, 58) sts.
Next Row. K across row to within, last 5 sts, drop Cocoa, pick up Black (when changing color always pick up new color from underneath color which is dropped, thus twisting yarn around each other to avoid a hole), K 5.
Next Row. P 5, drop Black, pick up Cocoa, P across row.
Repeat these 2 rows twice.
Next Row. P across row to within last 5 sts, drop Cocoa, pick up Black, P 5.
Next Row. P 5, drop Black, pick up Cocoa, P across row.
The last 2 rows form the hemline.
Change to No. 8 needles, with Cocoa work even in pattern same as on Back (omitting border sts), drop Cocoa, pick up Black, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * once, K 1 (seed st border).
Work seed st in Black over the 5 border sts on entire Front edge, work even until Front measures 5 inches from beginning ending at side edge.
Pocket Slit: Work across 22 (22, 24, 24) sts, place remaining sts on a holder. Cast on 20 sts (inside pocket) at the end of last row. Work in stockinette st on the 20 cast on sts and keep pattern uniform on remaining sts, work even until pocket measures 5 inches from cast on sts, ending on right side.
Next Row. Bind off 20 sts, cut yarn, slip remaining sts on a holder.
Slip 31 (33, 37, 39) sts from 1st holder on needle, attach another skein of Black and cast on 3 sts at slit edge (always work these 3 sts in seed st), drop Black, attach Cocoa, work even until Front measures same as underneath pocket ending on wrong side at slit edge to corresponding row of pattern at side edge.
Next Row. Bind off the 3 cast on sts, cut Black, work across row.
Next Row. Work across 31 (33, 37, 39) sts. Slip 22 (22, 24, 24) sts from holder on free needle and continue to work even in pattern across all sts until Front measures same as Back to underarm ending at Armhole edge.
Next Row. Bind off 6 sts at beginning of row.
Work 1 row even.
Next Row. Bind off 3 (3, 4, 5) sts at beginning of row then decrease 1 st at armhole edge every other row 4 (5, 6, 6) times.
Work even until Armhole measures 5½ (5½, 5¾, 5¾) inches from 1st bind off ending at Neck edge.
Next Row. Work across 11 (11, 12, 12) sts at Neck edge, cut Black, place these sts on a st holder, then bind off 2 sts at neck edge every other row until 23 (24, 25, 26) sts remain. Work even until Armhole measures same as Back Armhole.
Bind off Shoulder same as Back Shoulder. Mark position for 7 (7, 8, 8) buttons evenly spaced on Left Front border, placing 1st marker 3 inches from bottom and top marker ½ inch from neck edge.
Right Front: Work same as Left Front, reversing all shaping and working buttonholes to correspond to markers 2 sts in from Front Edge.
Buttonholes: Bind off 1 st, on next row cast on 1 st over the bound off st of previous row.
Sleeves: With Cocoa on No. 6 needles, cast on 52 (54, 60, 62) sts. Work in stockinette st for 6 rows.
Next 2 Rows. P across each row. This forms hemline. Change to No. 8 needles and work in pattern same as on Back. Keeping pattern uniform, increase 1 st on each side every 1¾ (1¾, 2, 2) inches until there are 70 (72, 76, 78) sts on needle. Work even until Sleeve measures 16½ (16½, 17, 17) inches from beginning or length desired to underarm.
Next 2 Rows. Bind off 5 (5, 6, 6) sts at beginning of each row, then decrease 1 st on each side every other row until there are 42 (44, 44, 46) sts on needle.
Next 6 Rows. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row. Bind off remaining sts.
Finishing: Block each section. Sew pockets in position. With Black sew Pocket flaps in position. Sew Shoulders, Sides and Sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in Armholes. Turn under at lower edge and around sleeve edge at hemline and sew in position.
Collar: With right side facing on No. 6 needles, slip 11 (11, 12, 12) sts from holder on free needle, attach Cocoa, pick up and K 12 sts around Neck edge to Shoulder, slip and K 24 (26, 26, 28) sts from holder across Back, pick up and K 12 sts along other Front Neck edge, cut yarn, without working slip the 11 (11, 12, 12) sts from other holder on same needle.
Next Row. Attach Black, keeping seed st uniform on Front borders, P across row.
Next Row. Work in seed st across all 70 (72, 74, 76) sts until Collar measures 3 inches from beginning, bind off in seed st.
Face Front edges with ribbon. Finish buttonholes. Sew buttons in position. Sew narrow grosgrain ribbon across Shoulders and Neck Edge.
