Straight Line Cardigan Pattern

Sizes: 10, 12, 14 and 16

Materials Required:
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
"DAWN" WOOL and NYLON FINGERING YARN
or
"DAWN" SWEATER & SOCK YARN
"SANFORLAN" WON'T SHRINK OUT OF FIT or
"DAWN" NYLON
9   (9, 11, 12) ounces White
2 (2, 2, 3) ounces Lt. Blue or Baby Blue or colors of your choice and
"STAR" SIX STRAND MERCER­IZED EMBROIDERY COTTON, ARTICLE 50
1 skein each Heliotrope, Lt. Heliotrope, Dk. Helio­trope, Lt. Emerald and Yellow
10 buttons, 1½ yds. 1 inch grosgrain ribbon
Knitting Needles: 1 pr. No. 2 or any size needle which will result in stitch gauge below.
Steel crochet hook No. 2.

Gauge: 8 sts = 1 inch; 16 garter st rows = 1 inch; 10 rows garter st and 1 pattern stripe = 1 inch

Directions are given for size 10. Sizes 12, 14 and 16 are given in parentheses.

With White cast on 120 (126, 132, 138) stitches (sts) and work 27 (27, 29, 29) rows in garter st (Knit all rows), drop White.
1st Pattern Row. Attached Blue Knit (K) across row (right side).
2nd Pattern Row. Insert needle in first st, yarn over (yo) needle 3 times, pull through st, slip (sl) st off needle, * insert needle in next st, yo needle 3 times, pull through st, sl st off needle, repeat from * across row, drop Blue.
3rd Pattern Row. Pick up White, slip 1st 6 sts on right hand needle dropping the yo's, slip them back on left hand needle by inserting needle in 3rd, 2nd and 1st st in front of work passing them over the last 3 sts, then slip the last 3 sts on left hand needle (thus crossing sts), K each of these 6 sts working through back loop of each st, * slip next 6 sts on right hand needle drop­ping the yo's, slip them back on left hand needle by inserting needle in 3rd, 2nd, and 1st st in front of work passing them over the last 3 sts, then slip the last 3 sts on left hand needle (thus crossing sts), K each of these 6 sts working through back loop of each st, repeat from * across row. The last 3 rows are pattern rows.
K 25 (25, 27, 27) rows increasing 1 st at beginning and end of 8th and 18th rows of White stripe. Pick up Blue and repeat the 3 pattern rows. Continue to work in stripes having 2 rows less in each White stripe and increasing 1 st at beginning and end of every 30th (22nd, 19th, 16th) row taking in new patterns on each side until there are 130 (138, 146, 154) sts. Work even until 6 Blue stripes are completed.

Start Raglan. Next 2 Rows. Bind off 2 (2, 3, 3) sts at beginning of each row. Working in stripes same as be­fore decrease 1 st at each end every other row having 16 (16, 16, 18) rows in next White stripe, then con­tinue to work in stripes working 2 rows less in each White stripe and decreasing 1 st at each end every other row until 5 (4, 3, 4) Blue Stripes are completed on Raglan, then continue to work 2 rows less in each White stripe and decrease 1 st on each end every other row of each White stripe and 1 st each end of every Blue row until 34 (36, 38, 38) sts remain. Work even until there are 14 (14, 15, 14) Blue Stripes from beginning having 4 rows in each of the last 2 (2, 3, 1) White Stripes. Work 1 row even in White, bind off.

Left Front. With White cast on 68 (72, 76, 80) sts and K 27 (27, 29, 29) rows.
Attach Blue and K across row (right side). Work 2nd and 3rd rows of pattern same as on Back crossing odd sts at side edge. K 6 rows.
Next Row. Increase 1 st at end of row (side edge). K 7 (7, 9, 9) rows.
Next Row. K across row increasing 1 st at end of row (side edge). K 9 rows.
Next Row. With Blue K across row.
Next Row. Repeat 2nd Pattern row.
Next Row. Same as 3rd Pattern row crossing 2 (1, —, 1) sts at beginning of row. Always keep 6 sts to cross at Front edge on all sizes. Any odd number of sts should be crossed on side edge. K 23 (23, 25, 25) rows increas­ing 1 st at side edge of center row of White Stripe. Continue working in stripes same as Back having 2 rows less in each White stripe throughout and increas­ing 1 st at side edge in center row of each White stripe until there are 74 (78, 82, 86) sts. Work even until 6 Blue stripes are completed.
Next Row. Start Raglan: bind off 2 (2, 3, 3) sts at side edge. Working in stripes same as before decrease 1 st at side edge every other row having 16 (16, 16, 18) rows in first stripe.
Continue to work in stripes having 2 rows less in each White stripe and decreasing 1 st at side edge every other row until 5 (4, 4, 7) Blue Stripes are completed on Raglan.
Continue working in same manner having 2 rows less in each White stripe and decrease 1 st at side edge every other row and 1 st at side edge of each Blue row until 26 (26, 28, 30) sts remain. Work even having 4 rows in each of the last 2 (2, 3, 1) White Stripes until there are 14 (14, 15, 14) Blue Stripes from beginning. Work 1 row even in White, bind off. Place a pin in center of each of 5 White stripes from lower edge, then place a pin in center of every other White Stripe for buttons.

Right Front. Work to correspond to Left Front re­versing all shaping and working buttonholes to cor­respond to pins.

Buttonholes: Starting at Front edge K 2, bind off next 3 sts, K across remainder of row. On next row cast on 3 sts over the bound off sts.

Sleeves: With White cast on 60 (64, 64, 68) sts. K 21 (21, 23, 23) rows.
Next Row. Increase 1 st each end. K 10 rows even. Attach Blue and work 1st, 2nd and 3rd Pattern rows same as on Back.
For a Longer Sleeve repeat the last 36 (36, 38, 38) rows once.
Work in stripes same as on Back having 2 rows less in each White stripe and increasing 1 st each end of every 8th row until there are 106 (110, 114, 118) sts. Work even until 8 Blue Stripes are completed or 9 Blue Stripes for Longer Sleeve.
Next 2 Rows. Bind off 2 (2, 3, 3) sts at beginning of each row. Continue working in stripes decreasing 1 st each end every other row having 16 (16, 16, 18) rows in next White stripe and having 2 rows less in each White stripe until 18 (20, 22, 24) sts remain. Work even until 8 (8, 9, 8) Blue Stripes are completed in Raglan having 4 rows in each of the last 2 (2, 3, 1) White Stripes.
K 1 row even in White, bind off.

Finishing. Block each section. Sew Raglan and under­arm seams. Sew Sleeve seams and sew Sleeves in posi­tion.
With White crochet a row of slip stitches (sl sts) up Front, around Neck and down opposite Front, cut yarn. Face the Fronts and around Neck with grosgrain ribbon cutting the buttonholes in the ribbon to correspond. Finish buttonholes using buttonhole sts working through both thicknesses. Sew buttons in position. With "STAR" SIX STRAND MERCER­IZED EMBROIDERY COTTON, embroider flowers as illustrated using a lazy daisy stitch for flowers and leaves and working a French Knot in center of each flower in Yellow arranging colors as desired.
