These directions are for medium size (8-10). Changes for large size (12-14) are in parentheses.

MATERIALS
BERNAT Nylo Germantown (2 oz. skeins) — 8(9)
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 8 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 aluminum crochet hook Size F
6 buttons
Seam binding

GAUGE: 6 sts = 1 inch; 11 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 4 sts plus 3.
Row 1: K 3, * sl 1, K 3, repeat from * across row.
Row 2: K 3, * bring yarn to front of work and sl 1, throw yarn to back of work, K 3, repeat from * across row.
Row 3: K 1, * sl 1, K 3, repeat from *, ending sl 1, K 1.
Row 4: K 1, * bring yarn to front of work and sl 1, throw yarn to back of work, K 3, repeat from *, ending bring yarn to front of work and sl 1, throw yarn to back of work, K 1.
Repeat these 4 rows for pattern stitch.

BACK: Cast on 131(139) sts. K 1 row. Work in pattern st, dec 1 st each end of needle every 10th row 12(13) times; every 8th row 3(6) times; every 4th row 13(9) times; every other row 2(3) times and EVERY ROW 20(22) times. Bind off remaining 31(33) sts.

LEFT FRONT: Cast on 87(95) sts. K 1 row. Work in pattern st, dec 1 st at arm edge every 10th row 2(3) times; every 8th row 1(0) times. Work even on 84(92) sts for 0(2) rows, end­ing with Row 4. ARM SLIT: Work 43(47) sts, K 2 tog, join another ball of yarn; keeping pattern as established, work last 39(43) sts. Working on both sides at once, continue to dec 1 st at arm edge every 10th row 0(2) times more and every 8th row 9(6) times. Work even on both sides for 1 row, ending with wrong side row. TO JOIN: Work 34(39) sts, inc 1 st in next st; break off second ball of yarn; and continue in pattern st on last 39(43) sts — 75(84) sts. Con­tinue to dec 1 st at arm edge every 8th row 6(8) times more. Dec 1 st at same edge every 4th row 10(11) times; every other row twice and EVERY ROW 6(10) times — 51(53) sts. SHAPE NECK: Continuing to dec 1 st at arm edge EVERY ROW 22 times more, at front edge bind off 22 (24) sts and dec 1 st at same edge every other row 7 times.

RIGHT FRONT:Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping and position of slit and forming first double buttonhole when piece measures 11(12) inches. DOUBLE BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 4 sts, bind off next 4 sts, work until there are 14 sts on needle after bound off sts, bind off next 4 sts, work to end of row. On next row cast on 4 sts over each group of sts bound off previous row. Make 2 more sets of double buttonholes, evenly spaced — the last one to be made ½ inch below start of neck shaping.

COLLAR: Cast on 83(87) sts. K 1 row. Work in pattern st, inc 1 st each end of needle every other row 2(3) times. Work even on 87(93) sts until piece measures 1(1½) inches. On next row dec 1 st each end of needle and repeat this dec every 6th row twice more, every other row 4 times, and EVERY ROW 3 times. Bind off remaining 67(73) sts.

FINISHING: Sew side seams. With right side facing you, work 1 row s c around collar and sew to neck edge to within 2½ inches of each front edge. With right side facing you, work 1 row s c around cape and slits. Finish buttonholes. Block. Sew on buttons. Bind side seams to prevent sagging.
