These directions are for subteen size 8. Changes for subteen sizes 10, 12 and 14 are in parentheses.

FYI: The pattern indicates that there is a chart associated with this pattern. However and unfortunately, no chart was found in the original publication from 1957.

MATERIALS
BERNAT Ski and Sports (2 oz. skeins) — 6(7-7-8) Main Color (M C)
BERNAT Bob-o-Germantown (20 yd. cards) — 2 each of Scarlet (Color A) and White (Color B)
1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 4 and 6 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 set d p needles No. 4

GAUGE: 5 sts = 1 inch; 7 rows = 1 inch

CABLE PATTERN: To be worked on 6 sts as designated.
Row 1: P 1, K 4, P 1.
Row 2 and all even rows: K 1, P 4, K 1.
Row 3: P 1, slip next 2 sts onto d p needle and hold in front of work, K 2, K 2 sts from d p needle, P 1.
Rows 5 and 7: Repeat Row 1.
Row 8: Repeat Row 2.
Repeat these 8 rows for cable pattern.

FRONT: Using No. 4 needles and M C, cast on 76(80-84-88) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2½ inches. Change to No. 6 needles. Row 1: Using M C, K 12(13-15-16), * work Row 1 of cable pattern on next 6 sts, following chart work design in stockinette st on next 8 sts, work Row 1 of cable pattern on next 6 sts *, K 12(14-14-16) M C, repeat between *'s once more, K 12(13-15-16) M C. Row 2: Using M C, P 12(13-15-16), * work Row 2 of cable pattern on next 6 sts, follow­ing chart work design on next 8 sts, work Row 2 of cable pattern on next 6 sts *, P 12(14-14-16) M C, repeat between *'s once more, P 12(13-15-16) M C. Work even in pattern as established until piece measures 11(11½-12-12½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5 sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 3(4-4-5) times. Work even on 60(62-66-68) sts until armholes measure 3¾(4¼-4¾-5¼) inches. SHAPE NECK: Work 21(22-23-24) sts, sl next 18(18-20-20) sts onto holder, join another ball of yarn, work last 21(22-23-24) sts. Working on both sides at once, dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 3 times. Work even on 18(19-20-21) sts of each side until armholes meas­ure 5½(6-6½-7) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 6(6-7-7) sts twice and 6(7-6-7) sts once.

BACK: Work in M C stockinette st to correspond to front, omitting cable pattern, knit in design and neck shaping, un­til armholes measure 5½(6-6½-7) inches. SHAPE SHOUL­DERS: At the beg of each of the next 4 rows bind off 6(6-7-7) sts. At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6(7-6-7) sts. Sl remaining 24(24-26-26) sts onto holder.

SLEEVES: Using No. 4 needles and M C, cast on 40(42-44- 46) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2½ inches. Change to No. 6 needles and work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 2 inches 5(5-6-6) times. Work even on 50(52-56-58) sts until piece measures 15½(16-16½-17) inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5 sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every 4th row 4 times and every other row 3(4-6-7) times. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

FINISHING: Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. TURTLE NECK: Using d p needles and M C, with right side facing you, pick up 74(76-78-80) sts around neck, including sts from holders. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 4½ inches. Bind off loosely. Block to size.
