These directions are for subteen size 8. Changes for subteen sizes 10, 12 and 14 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS
BERNAT Cuddlespun (2 oz. skeins) — 8(8-9-9)
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 10½ OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 d p needle or cable holder
8 buttons

GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 inch; 5 rows = 1 inch

BACK: Cast on 51(55-57-59) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2½ inches. On next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every 1 inch 5 times more, forming new ribs as sts are increased. Work even on 63(67-69-71) sts until piece measures 9½(10-10½-11) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3(4-4-4) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 3 times. Work even on 51(53-55-57) sts until armholes measure 5¾(6¼-6¾-7¼) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4 rows bind off 5(6-6-6) sts. At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6(5-5-6) sts. Bind off remaining 19(19-21-21) sts.

PATTERN STITCH FOR FRONT: To be worked on 9 sts as designated.
Row 1: K 2, y o, sl next 2 sts, K 3 sts tog, pass the 2 slipped sts over last 2 worked, y o, K 2. (There will be 7 sts be­tween markers at the end of this row, counting y o's as sts.)
Row 2: P 2, K in front and back of y o (2 sts made from y o), P 1, K in front and back of y o (2 sts made from y o), P 2 — 9 sts.
Rows 3 and 5: K 2, P 5, K 2.
Rows 4 and 6: P 2, K 5, P 2.
Row 7: Sl 2 sts onto d p needle and hold in front of work, P 2, K the 2 sts from d p needle, P 1, sl next 2 sts onto d p needle and hold in back of work, K the next 2 sts, P the 2 sts from d p needle.
Row 8: K 2, P 2, K 1, P 2, K 2.
Repeat these 8 rows for pattern stitch.

LEFT FRONT: Cast on 29(29-31-33) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2½ inches. At the beg of next row inc 1 st (arm edge), work in ribbing to last 13 sts, put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of pattern st on next 9 sts, put a marker on needle, work in ribbing to end of row. Row 2: Work in ribbing to first marker, work Row 2 of pattern st to next marker, work in ribbing to end of row. Keeping the 9 sts between markers in pattern st and remaining sts in ribbing, inc 1 st at arm edge every 1 inch 3(5-5-5) times more. Work even on 33(35-37-39) sts until piece measures 9½(10-10½-11) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 3(4-4-4) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times. Work even on 27(28-30-32) sts until armhole measures 4½(5-5½-6) inches. SHAPE NECK: At front edge bind off 7(7-9-10) sts. Dec 1 st at neck edge EVERY ROW 4 times. Work even on 16(17-17-18) sts until armhole measures 5¾(6¼-6¾-7¼) inches. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 5(6-6-6) sts twice and 6(5-5-6) sts once.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front, reversing placing of pattern and all shaping and forming first button­hole when piece measures ¼ inch. BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 1 st, y o, work next 2 sts tog, work to end of row. Make 7 more buttonholes, evenly spaced — the last one to be made 1 inch below start of neck shaping.

SLEEVES: Cast on 31(33-35-37) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing, inc 1 st each end of needle every 2½ inches 5 times, forming new ribs as sts are increased. Work even on 41(43-45-47) sts until piece measures 15½(16-16½-17) inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3(4-4-4) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 2¾(3¼_3¾-4¼) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 2 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

COLLAR: Cast on 13 sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 12½(12½- 13-13) inches. Bind off.

FINISHING: Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. Sew on collar. Steam lightly. Sew on buttons.
