Blazer for Girl or Boy Pattern

Directions are for 2-year size. Changes for 4 and 6 years are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
NOMOTTA Mothproof Sports Yarn or Orion (matched dye-lots)
3 (4-4) 1-oz. balls
1 pair needles size 2
6 buttons

GAUGE: 7½ sts = 1 inch; 10 rows = 1 inch

BACK: Cast on 86 (90-94) sts. Starting with a purl row, work in Stockinette-st (K 1 row, P 1 row) for 8 rows, end with a knit row. Knit across next purl row (hemline). Continue in Stockinette-st until back measures 8 (8½-9) ins above hem­line.

Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each end every other row 5 (5-6) times; 68 (72-74) sts remain. Work straight until armholes measure 4½ (4¾-5) ins straight up from bound-off sts.

Shape Shoulders: Bind off 11 (12-12) sts at beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off remaining 24 (24-26) sts for back of neck.

POCKET LINING: Make 2. Cast on 20 sts and work in Stockinette-st for 2¼ ins, end with a purl row. Break yarn and slip sts on a holder.

NOTE: Buttonholes are worked on Right Front border for Girl, on Left Front for Boy. Work the Front without button­holes first.

LEFT FRONT: Cast on 46 (50-54) sts. Work 8 rows, end with a knit row. Knit across next purl row (hemline). Work 8 more rows; at end of next knit row, cast on 7 sts (front edge) for border facing; 53 (57-61) sts. Keeping 7 sts at front edge in Reverse Stockinette-st, work straight until 2¼ (2¼-2½) ins above hemline, end with a purl row. Insert Pocket Lining as follows: K 12 sts, slip next 20 sts on a holder for Pocket Edge, knit across the 20 sts on holder having knit side of lin­ing face purl side of front; work to end of row. Continue to work straight until front measures same as back to armhole.

Shape Armhole: Bind off 4 (4-5) sts at armhole edge; de­crease 1 stitch at same edge every other row 4 (4-5) times. Work straight until armhole measures 1 (l-l¼) ins. Slip a marker on needle 14 sts in from front edge.

Shape Neck and Shoulder: Decrease 1 stitch inside marker every 4th row 4 times, then every other row 5 (7-9) times; at the same time, when armhole measures same as back, bind off 11 (12-12) sts at armhole edge every other row 2 times.

Neckband: On remaining 14 sts, work straight until band will fit around to center back of neck. Slip sts on a thread to be woven together with Right Band or bind off and sew bands together.

With pins, mark position of 6 buttons on Left Front as a guide in placing buttonholes having first pin about ¼ inch above hemline and 6th pin about ¼ inch below neck shaping.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with Left Front re­versing shaping and working 6 sets of Buttonholes as follows: Starting at front edge, work 2 sts, bind off next 3 sts, work 4 sts, bind off next 3 sts, work to end of row. On next row, cast on 3 sts over the bound-off sts (2 buttonholes in row).

SLEEVES:Cast on 47 (49-51) sts. Work 8 rows, end with a knit row. Knit across next purl row (hemline). Continue in Stockinette-st until 1½ (1½-2) ins above hemline. Increase 1 stitch at each end of next row. Repeat this increase every 8th row 6 times more; 61 (63-65) sts. Work straight until sleeve measures 8 (9-9½) ins straight up from hemline.

Shape Cap: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. De­crease 1 stitch at each end every knit row 14 (15-16) times; 23 sts remain. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off remaining 15 sts.

FINISHING: Press each piece and sew seams. Sew neckband to back of neck holding in neck slightly. Turn back all hems and border facing and sew to wrong side. Sew neatly around each buttonhole work­ing through both thicknesses. Pocket Band: Slip sts from holder onto a needle. With right side facing you, pick up and knit one stitch on right side of opening, work firmly in ribbing of K 1, P 1 across pocket sts, then pick up and knit one stitch on other side of opening; 22 sts. Continue in rib­bing for 4 more rows, then bind off in ribbing.
