MATERIALS: 
  NOMOTTA  Mothproof Germantown Zephyr (matched dye-lots)
  7  (8-8) 1-oz skeins
  5  Buttons
  Steel  crochet hook size 1
GAUGE: 5 sts = 1 inch; 10 rows = 1 inch
PATTERN STITCH: On an even number of stitches.
    ROW 1: (right side) *K 1, P 1; repeat from * across.
    ROW 2: Purl  across.
    ROW 3: *P 1, K 1; repeat from * across. 
    ROW 4: Purl across.
Repeat  these 4 rows for pattern.
COAT
BACK: Cast on 72 (78-80) sts. Starting with a purl row, work in Stockinette-st for 4 rows. Knit across next purl row (hemline). Change to Pattern-st and work 2 ins. Keeping to established pattern, decrease 1 stitch at each end of next row, then every 2 (1½-1½) ins 3 (4-4) times more; 64 (68-70) sts remain. Work straight until 9 (9½-10) ins from hemline. Mark each end of last row to indicate start of sleeves.
Shape Sleeves: Increase 1 stitch at each end every other row 4 (5-5) times, then cast on 15 (15-16) sts at end of next 4 rows; 132 (138-144) sts. Work straight until sleeve edge measures 3¼ (3½-4) ins straight up from last cast-on sts.
Shape Sleeves and Shoulders: Bind off 8 (8-9) sts at beginning of next 10 rows; 5 (6-5) sts at beginning of next 6 rows. Slip remaining 22 (22-24) sts on a holder for neck.
LEFT FRONT: Cast on 40 (43-46) sts. Starting with a purl row, work in Stockinette-st for 4 rows. Knit across next purl row (hemline). Change to Pattern-st and keeping center front edge straight, decrease 1 stitch at side edge every 2 ins 3 (3-4) times; 37 (40-42) sts remain. Work straight until front measures same as back to beginning of sleeves.
Shape Sleeve: Increase 1 stitch at side edge every other row 4 (5-5) times, then cast on 15 (15-16) sts at same edge every other row twice; 71 (75-79) sts. Work straight until sleeve edge measures 3¼ (3½-4) ins.
Shape Neck and Shoulder: Bind off 8 (8-9) sts at sleeve edge every other row 5 times; 5 (6-5) sts 3 times, at the same time, when working last bind-off, bind off 3 (4-4) sts at beginning of neck edge. Slip remaining 13 (13-15) sts on a holder for collar.
With pins, mark position of 3 (4-4) buttons on Left Front as a guide in working buttonholes, having first pin about 8½ (9-9) ins from bottom and 3rd (4th-4th) pin 2 ins below neck edge.
RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond with Left Front, reversing shaping and working 3 (4-4) buttonholes as follows: Starting at front edge, work 2 sts, bind off next 2 sts, work to end of row. On next row, cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts.
COLLAR:With right side of coat facing you, slip right front,  back and left front-sts from holders onto needle; 48 (48-54) sts. Attach yarn  in first st of left front. With wrong side of coat facing you, purl across all  sts (right side of collar). Work  Short Rows as follows:
  Row 1: Keeping established  pattern, work across 27 (27-30) sts, turn. Row 2: P 6, turn. Row 3: Increase 1 stitch in first st, work in Pattern across next 5 sts, increase 1  stitch in next st, work one more st, turn. Row  4: P 12, turn. Row 5: Increase 1  stitch in first st, work in Pattern across next 11 sts, increase 1 stitch in  next st, work one more st, turn. Row 6: P 18, turn. Repeat last 2 rows once, having 6 sts more at end of each row. Row 9: Increase 1 stitch in first st,  work in Pattern across next 23 sts, increase 1 stitch in next st, work 2 more  sts, turn. Row 10: P 32, turn. Row 11: Increase 1 stitch in first st,  work in Pattern across 31 sts, increase 1 stitch in next st, work 2 more sts,  turn. Row 12: P 40, turn. Row 13: Increase 1 stitch in first st,  work in Pattern across 39 sts, increase 1 stitch in next st, work in Pattern  across remaining sts on left-hand needle, turn. Purl across all 60 (60-66) sts.  Work straight in Pattern for 10 (10-12) rows. Bind off on next row.
POCKET FLAP: Make 2. Cast on 16 sts. Work in Pattern for 12 rows. Bind off on next row.
FINISHING: Press lightly and sew seams—leave 1½ ins open at upper edge of each sleeve. On right side, work 1 row of sc along fronts, outside edge of collar, lower edge of sleeve and around sleeve opening. Lap front edge of sleeve over back edge and sew a button on top sewing through both pieces. Turn back hem and sew to wrong side. Sew pocket flaps to coat as shown on photograph.
BONNET
Cast on 70 (70-74) sts. Starting at face edge, work in Pattern for 6 (6½-6½) ins. Bind off 24 (24-25) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. On remaining 22 (22-24) center sts, work in Pattern for 6 rows. *Bind off 1 stitch at beginning of next 2 rows. Work 3 rows; repeat from * until 14 (16-16) sts remain. Work straight until center section is same length as side section. Bind off.
FINISHING: Sew center back section to side section. Allowing 2 inches for front roll, work 1 row of sc around side and center sections holding in edge slightly. Slip a plastic head clip inside roll and fasten (for a firm roll work 1 row of crochet around clip to cover it before inserting).
