Two Color Baby Jacket and Bonnet Pattern

Directions are for 6-month size. Changes for 1-year size are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
NOMOTTA Non-Shrink Mothproof Baby Wool or Pompadour
2 (3) 1-oz balls White (A)
1 1-oz. balls Contrasting Color (CC)
1 pair needles size 2
4 small pearl buttons
steel crochet hook size 4

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 12 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH: On an uneven number of sts.
ROWS 1 AND 2: With CC, K 1, P 1 across row, ending with K l.
ROW 3: With A, repeat Row 1.
ROW 4: With A, purl across row.
ROW 5: With A, knit across row.
ROW 6: With A, purl across row.
Repeat these 6 rows for pattern.

JACKET

NOTE: The Jacket is worked in one piece to underarm.

BODY: With CC, cast on 163 (175) sts. Starting with a purl row, work in Stockinette-st for 6 rows, ending with a knit row. Next row, P 1, then P 2 together across remaining sts; 82 (88) sts remain.

Eyelet Row (hemline): With A, K 1, *YO, K 1; repeat from * across; 163 (175) sts. This completes eyelets. With A, purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Change to Pattern-st and work until there are 10 (11) CC stripes, ending with Row 3 (work should measure about 5 (5½) ins straight up from hemline). Divide work as follows: P 38 (42) sts (Left Front), bind off next 6 sts (Left Armhole), P 75 (79) sts (Back), bind off next 6 sts (Right Armhole), purl remaining 38 (42) sts (Right Front). Break yarn and slip all sts on a holder.

SLEEVES: Make 2. With CC, cast on 45 (49) sts and work in Stockinette-st for 6 rows. Next row, P 1, then P 2 together across remaining sts; 23 (25) sts. With A, work Eyelet Row same as for Body (hemline); 45 (49) sts. With A, purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Change to Pattern-st and work 1 inch, then increase 1 st at each side of next row. Repeat this in­crease every 6th row 3 (4) times more; 53 (59) sts. Work straight until there are 11 (12) CC stripes, ending with Row 2 (sleeve should measure about 5½ (6) ins from hemline). Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows and slip remaining 47 (53) sts on a holder. Work 2nd sleeve to correspond and leave on needle. Join all sections together as follows: knit across 38 (42) sts of Right Front, work across 47 (53) sts for one sleeve, work across 75 (79) sts for Back, work across sts on needle for 2nd sleeve, then work across 38 (42) sts for Left Front; 245 (269) sts. Purl across all sts.

YOKE: Work in Pattern-st for 11 rows. Decrease 26 (25) sts across next row (purl together about every 8th and 9th st, (9th and 10th) st). Repeat this decrease every 6th row 6 (7) times more, always having 1 st less between decreases after each decrease row; 63 (69) sts remain. Work 1 CC stripe and bind off loosely with A.

FINISHING: Press lightly and sew seams.

Folding along eyelet row, turn back all hems and sew to wrong side. With A and right side toward you, work 1 row of sc along Right Front edge, then work 1 row of Picots around neck edge as follows: Work 2 sc in corner st, *ch 2, draw up a loop in same st as last st, draw up a loop in next st, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around working 2 sc in corner st; now, work 1 row of sc along Left Front edge.

Work 3 (ch-2) buttonloops on Right Front of Yoke placing top loop close to neck edge.

BONNET

With CC, cast on 93 (99) sts. Starting at face edge, work in Stockinette-st for 6 rows. Decrease across next purl row for Eyelets; 47 (50) sts. Work Eyelet Row same as for jacket. With A, purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Change to Pattern-st and work until there are 4 (5) CC stripes (about 2½ (3) ins from hemline). Change to Stockinette-st and with A only, work straight until work measures 4 (4½) ins from hemline end with a purl row.

For 6-Month Size: Decrease 3 sts evenly spaced across next K row (90) sts. Purl back.

First Decrease Row: *K 8 (9), K 2 together; repeat from * across row; (9 sts decreased); 81 (90) sts remain. Purl back.

2nd Decrease Row: *K 7 (8), K 2 together; repeat from * across; (9 sts decreased); 72 (81) sts remain. Continue to decrease 9 sts across every knit row until 18 sts remain always having 1 stitch less between decreases after each decrease row. Break yarn leaving a 12-inch end. Draw end through all 18 sts twice, and sew back seam to first decrease row. Turn back hem at face edge and sew to wrong side. With A, work 1 row of sc around lower back edge then work 1 row of Picots same as for neck edge. Leave yarn and work Chin Strap as follows: Ch 22, 1 sc in 5th ch from hook (buttonloop), 1 sc in next ch, ch 2, skip 2 ch (2nd buttonloop), 1 sc in each ch to end. Turn and work 1 row of sc around strap working 2 sc under (ch-2) loop and 4 sc under end (ch-5) loop. Press lightly.
