Playsuit with Jacket Pattern

Directions are for 1-year size. Changes for 2 and 3 years are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
NOMOTTA Non-Shrink Mothproof Nylon or Baby Wool
5 (5-6) 1-oz. balls Main Color (MC)
small amount of 2 Contrasting Colors (A and B)
1 pair needles size 2
8 small buttons
¾ yard (½-inch) elastic

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 inch; 12 rows = 1 inch

PANTS

BACK: First Leg: Cast on 36 (39-42) sts. Work in Stock­inette-st (K 1 row, P 1 row) for 9 rows. Knit across next purl row (hemline). Continue in Stockinette-st for 9 more rows. Next Row: Purl, increasing 1 stitch in every 3rd st across row; 48 (52-56) sts. Cast on 20 sts at end of row for crotch. Break yarn, slip these 68 (72-76) sts on a holder. Work 2nd Leg to correspond, working 8 rows after hemline. Next Row: Knit, increasing 12 (13-14) sts across row same as for first leg; 48 (52-56) sts. Slip the 68 (72-76) sts from holder on free needle. Shape Crotch and work Short Rows as follows: With needle of 2nd Leg sts, knit across 28 sts of first Leg, turn; slip first st (always slip first st as if to purl), P 35, turn; slip first st, K 43, turn; slip first st, P 51, turn. Continue to work in this manner, always working 8 sts more at end of every row until 8 (4-8) sts remain unworked at each side, turn; slip first st, work to end of needle. Turn and work straight until back measures 6½ (7¼-8) ins straight up from center of crotch, end with a knit row. Next Row: P 2 (4-6) sts, P 2 together across row to last 2 (4-6) sts, purl these sts; 60 (66-72) sts remain.

Waistband: Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for ½ inch. Work Buttonholes in next row as follows: Work in ribbing across 16 (18-20) sts, bind off next 2 sts, work in ribbing across next 24 (26-28) sts, bind off next 2 sts, work to end of row. On next row, cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts. Continue in rib­bing until waistband measures 1¼ (1-1¼-1½) ins. Bind off in ribbing.

FRONT: Work same as for back to beginning of waistband, end with a knit row. Next Row: P 2 (3-4) sts, (P 2 together) 17 (18-19) times. Purl last 2 (3-4) sts; 82 (88-94) sts remain.

Waistband: Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 across 29 (31-33) sts, knit center 24 (26-28) sts, work in ribbing across remain­ing 29 (31-33) sts. Keeping center 24 (26-28) sts in Stock­inette-st and omitting buttonholes, work waistband same as for back. Bind off 19 (21-23) sts at beginning of next 2 rows; 44 (46-48) sts remain.

Bib: Keeping 10 sts at each end in ribbing of K 1, P 1 and working center 24 (26-28) sts in Stockinette-st, work straight until bib measures l¼ (1½-1¾) ins above bound-off sts in­creasing 1 stitch in center of last row. Now, work in ribbing across all 45 (47-49) sts for ¾-inch.

Straps: Work in ribbing across 10 sts, bind off center 25 (27-29) sts. Both straps may be worked at same time, using 2 balls of yarn. Work straight for 10 (11-12) ins or desired length. Bind off in ribbing.

FINISHING:Press lightly and sew side and crotch seams. Turn back hems of legs and sew to wrong side. Draw elastic through hems. Following chart, embroider design in duplicate stitch.

JACKET

BACK: Cast on 84 (88-96) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 1¼ (1¼-l½) ins. Change to Stockinette-st and work straight until back measures 3½ (4-4½) ins from start. Place a marker at each end to indicate start of sleeves.

Cap Sleeves: Increase 1 stitch at beginning of next 8 rows; 92 (96-104) sts. Work straight until sleeve edge measures 4 (4¼-4½) ins straight up from markers.

Shape Shoulders: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of next 10 (8-8) rows; 0 (8-11) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 22 (24-26) sts for back of neck.

NOTE: Buttonholes are worked on Left Front for Boy, on Right Front for Girl. Work the Front without buttonholes first.

RIGHT FRONT: Cast on 56 (58-60) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 1¼ (l¼-l½) ins. Keeping 8 sts at front edge in ribbing, change to Stockinette-st and work straight until front measures 3½ (4-4½) ins from start. Place a marker at side edge to indicate start of sleeve.

Shape Sleeve and Neck: Increase 1 stitch at side edge every other row 4 times, at the same time, decrease 1 stitch inside front border every other row until 43 (44-47) sts re­main. Work straight until sleeve measures same as back. Shape Shoulder same as back.

Neckband: On remaining 8 sts, work straight until band will reach center of back. Slip sts on a holder.

With pins, mark position of 3 sets of buttons, having first pin about ½ inch from bottom and remaining 2 sets about 1½ (1¾-2) ins apart.

LEFT FRONT: Work to correspond with Right Front, reversing shaping and working 3 sets of Buttonholes as follows: Starting at center front edge, work border, bind off next 2 sts, work 14 (15-16) sts, bind off next 2 sts, work to end of row (2 buttonholes in row). On next row, cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts.

FINISHING: Press lightly and sew shoulder seams. Sleeve Bands: With right side toward you, pick up and knit about 60 (64-70) sts across sleeve edge. Work in ribbing for ½ inch. Bind off in ribbing. Weave neckband-sts together. Sew band to back of neck holding in neck slightly. Sew side seams.
