BACK ... Starting at lower edge, cast on 144 (154, 164) sts. Work in stockinette st, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, decreasing 10 sts evenly spaced on one row every 1 inch until piece measures 2¼ inches, ending with a purl row. There are on needle 124 (134, 144) sts. Next row: * Sl 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. Following row: Purl across. Repeat the last 2 rows 4 more times. Continue in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until there are on needle 178 (188, 198) sts, ending with a purl row.

BACK OPENING ... Knit across 89 (94, 99) sts. Cast on 9 sts on right hand needle, turn and purl across. Work over the last set of 98 (103, 108) sts only, increasing 1 st at side edge every 5th row until there are on needle 105 (111, 116) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures in all 17 (17½, 18) inches, ending at side edge.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next row and every other row 3 times. Bind off 3 sts at same edge every other row 8 times. Bind off 6 sts at same edge every other row 5 times. Bind off at neck edge 33 (35, 37) sts. Work to end of row. Bind off 6 sts at shoulder edge and work to end of row. Bind off remaining 6 (10, 13) sts. Cast on 9 sts on spare needle and k across other sts of Back and work to correspond, reversing shapings.

FRONT ... Work as for Back until there are on needle 136 (146, 156) sts, ending with a knit row. Slip these sts on a No. 1 spare needle and lay aside.

FIRST TUCK ... Cast on 136 (146, 156) sts. Work in stockinette st, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row 3 times. Work without decreasing until 13 rows are completed, ending with a knit row. Next row: Knit across (hemline). Continue in stockinette st increasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row 3 times. Work without increasing until 13 rows in all are completed from hemline, ending with a knit row (this is tuck needle).

To Join Tuck: Pick up spare needle, with wrong side facing place in front of tuck needle, holding both needles together * with right hand needle, slip 1 st from tuck needle, then slip 1 st from front needle. Repeat from * across. Next row: * K 2 tog. Repeat from * across. There are on needle 136 (146. 156) sts.

NOTE: All tucks are made in this manner with the same number of sts which are on the front needle at the time each tuck is to be made.

Continue in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 5th row and making a tuck every 2 inches, until 6 tucks in all are completed. Then work in stockinette st as before, still increasing 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until there are on needle 192 (204, 214) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures 17 (17½, 18) inches in all, ending with a purl row.

To Shape Neck: Knit 86 (90, 93) sts, bind off next 20 (24, 28) sts and knit to end of row. Work over the last set of 86 (90, 93) sts only as follows: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next row for shoulder shaping, purl across. On next row bind off 2 sts at neck edge and knit across. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next row and purl across. Bind off 2 sts at neck edge and knit across. On next row decrease 1 st at neck edge every other row 10 times

At the Same Time

bind off at shoulder edge every other row 2 sts once; 3 sts 8 times; 6 sts 6 times. Bind off remaining 6 (10, 13) sts.

NECKBAND ... Cast on 12 sts and work in stockinette st until piece is long enough to go around entire neck edge.

Block to measurements. Turn tucks under and sew in place. Sew shoulder and side seams, leaving 7 (7½, 8) inches free at top for armholes. Turn narrow hems around armholes and sew in place on wrong side. Fold facing in half at back opening and sew in place on wrong side. Sew on neckband to form a roll. Fasten back opening with snap fasteners.
