GAUGE ... To obtain the correct size of garment it is necessary to maintain the same gauge as called for in the directions. Make a swatch about 3 x 3 inches and with a ruler measure the number of sts and the number of rows per inch. If you work tighter than the average knitter, you will get more sts per inch than specified in directions. You can correct this by using larger needles. If you work looser than the average knitter you will get less sts per inch than specified in directions—then use smaller needles.
JOINING YARN ... Always try to join a ball of yarn at the beginning of a row. If it is impossible to avoid joining yarn while working across row, leave an end about 3 inches long. Then start a new ball, also leaving a 3 inch end. After working for about an inch from new ball, make a square knot of these ends. Then run these ends through on the wrong side with a tapestry needle.
BLOCKING-STEAMING ... Pin each piece separately to a softly padded board or table and press through a damp cloth. Be careful to press similar pieces (like sleeves) to exactly the same size. It is practical to pin similar pieces together (right sides facing each other) and then pin both pieces to pad and desired measurements.
SEWING TOGETHER ... All seams in this book are sewed on wrong side of work with matching yarn and tapestry needle.
