Jack Frost Knitting Worsted—1 4-oz. Skein

RIGHT MITTEN: Cast on 39 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 2, as given for No. 5609, until piece measures 3 in. from lower edge. K 1 row, P 1 row, for 6 rows, then start thumb gusset as follows: Row 1—K 18, increase 1 st in next st, K 1, increase 1 st in next st, K 18. Row 2—Purl. Row 3—K 18, increase 1 st in next st, K 3, increase 1 st in next st, K 18. Row 4—Purl. Continue increasing in the above manner having 2 more sts between in­creases every other row until there are 7 increased rows in all. P 1 row after the last increased row, then work as follows: K 19; place on st-holder. K next 15 sts (thumb sts). Place remaining 19 sts on 2nd st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the 15 thumb sts for 14 rows, then decrease tip of thumb as follows: Row 1—* P 1, P 2 tog.; repeat from * across row. Row 2—K 2 tog. across row. Draw remaining sts tog. and fasten off. Sew thumb seam.
   Place the 19 sts from first st-holder to Needle. Attach yarn and pick up 3 sts at base of thumb. Place remaining 19 sts from 2nd st-holder to left hand Needle and K across row. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the 41 sts until piece measures 3½ in. from base of thumb. Decrease tip of mitten as follows: Row 1—K 1, K 2 tog., K 14, slip next st, K 1, P S S O (pass slipped st over the K st), K 2 tog., K 1, K 2 tog., K 14, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 1. Row 2—Purl. Row 3—K 1, K 2 tog., K 12, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 2, K 2 tog., K 12, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 1. Row 4—Purl. Row 5—K 1, K 2 tog., K 10, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 2, K 2 tog., K 10, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 1. Row 6—Purl. Row 7—K 1, K 2 tog., K 8, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 2, K 2 tog., K 8, slip next st, K 1, P S S O, K 1. Row 8—Purl.
   Weave or sew tip of mitten tog. Sew side seam.
LEFT MITTEN: Work as given for right mitten.
   Embroider as illustrated and trim with pompoms.
