Double Pointed Needle
Jack Frost Willow Yarn—2 2-oz. Skeins or
Jack Frost Knitting Worsted—1 4-oz. Skein
RIGHT MITTEN: With Willow Yarn or double strands of Knitting- Worsted, cast on 30 sts. Work as follows: Row 1—K 3, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 4; P 1, K 1, over remaining 13 sts. Row 2—K 1, P 1, over the first 13 sts; P 4, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 3. Repeat above 2 rows working a cable twist over the rib of K 6, on the 5th and every 6th row thereafter to tip of mitten as follows: slip the first 3 sts onto D P N (double pointed Needle), hold in back of work, K the next 3 sts, then bring the 3 slipped sts forward and K them. When piece measures 3 in. from lower edge, continuing cable twist, work as follows: Row 1—K 3, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 17. Row 2—P 17, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 3. Repeat above 2 rows once (4 rows in all), then start thumb gusset as follows: Row 1—K 3, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 2, increase 1 st in each of next 2 sts, K 13. Row 2—P 19, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 3. Row 3—K 3, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 2, increase 1 st in next st, K 2, increase 1 st in next st, K 13. Row 4—P 21, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 3. Row 5—K 3, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 2, increase 1 st in next st, K 4, increase 1 st in next st, K 13. Row 6—P 23, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 3, Row 7—K 3, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 2, increase 1 st in next st, K 6, increase 1 st in next st, K 13. Row 8—P 25, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 3. Row 9—K 3, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 2; place the 15 sts just worked, on a st-holder. K the next 10 sts for thumb. Place remaining 13 sts on 2nd st-holder. P 1 row. K 1 row, over the 10 thumb sts for 9 rows. K 2 tog. 5 times. Draw remaining sts tog. and fasten off. Sew thumb seam.
Place the sts from first st-holder to Needle. Attach yarn and pick up 2 sts at base of thumb. Place remaining sts from 2nd st-holder to left hand Needle and work across row. Work back and forth in pattern until piece measures 3 in. from base of thumb (size 10 to 12, 3¼ in.—12 to 14, 3½ in.). Decrease as follows: Row 1—K 1, K 2 tog., P 2, K 2 tog., K 1, K 2 tog., K 1, P 2, K 2, * K 2 tog., K 1; repeat from * across row. Row 2—P 12, K 2, P 4, K 2, P 2. Row 3—K 2, P 2, tog., K 2, K 2 tog., P 2, * K 2 tog., K 2; repeat from * across row. Row 4—P 9, K 2, P 3, K 1, P 2. Row 5—K 1; K 2 tog. across row ending K 2, Row 6—P 1; K 2 tog. across row. Draw remaining sts tog. and fasten off. Sew side seams.
LEFT MITTEN: Work as given for right mitten in reverse as follows: Row 1—P 1, K 1, over 13 sts, K 4, P 2, K 6, P 2, K 3. Row 2—P 3, K 2, P 6, K 2, P 4; K 1, P 1, over remaining 13 sts. Repeat above 2 rows working a cable twist over the rib of K 6, as given for right mitten. Continue working in reverse to correspond to right mitten.
