Size 34
Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Lustre Knitting Worsted, 10 skeins (1¼ oz. skeins).
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
Gauge: 5 sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.
Back. Starting at bottom, with No. 3 needles cast on 68 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches, increasing 12 sts on the last row at equal intervals. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 12½ inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 61 sts remain. With right side of work toward you, work as follows: 1st row: * K 1, p 2, k 1, p 3, k 1, p 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 2nd row: * P 1, k 2, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 1. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: K 1, p 2, then make a circle st (to make a circle st, slip next 4 sts onto a stitch holder; keeping stitch holder in back of work, k the next st, then slip 3 of the 4 sts on stitch holder back onto left-hand needle, place stitch holder in front of work and p the next 3 sts, then k the st on stitch holder). * P 2, k 1, p 2, make another circle stitch. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2, k 1. 6th to 12th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 1st rows alternately. 13th row: Same as 5th row. Repeat these last 8 rows (6th to 13th incl.) until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 6 rows and 3 sts at beginning of each of the following 2 rows. Bind off remaining sts. Break off.
Front. Work as for Back up to armhole shaping. Then shape armholes as for Back until 62 sts remain. With right side of work toward you, work as follows: 1st row: * K 1, p 2, k 1, p 3, k 1, p 2. Repeat from * 2 more times, k 1, turn (thus starting front opening). 2nd row: * P 1, k 2, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 2. Repeat from * 2 more times, p 1. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: K 1, p 2, make a circle stitch, then p 2, k 1, p 2, make a circle stitch. Repeat from * once more, ending with p 2, k 1. 6th to 12th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 1st rows alternately. 13th row: Same as 5th row. These last 8 rows (6th to 13th incl.) constitute the pattern. Repeat these 8 rows 2 more times. Starting at front edge, bind off 7 sts (thus starting neck shaping), then dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row but, when piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 5 sts every other row 3 times and 3 sts once, at the same time continuing with neck shaping until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach yarn at base of opening and work opposite side to correspond.
Sleeves. Starting at wrist, with No. 3 needles cast on 35 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work as follows: 1st row: K 13, p 2, k 1, p 3, k 1, p 2, k 13. 2nd row: P 1, inc. 1 st, p 12, k 2, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 2, p 12, inc. 1 st, p 1 (37 sts). 3rd row: K 14, p 2, k 1, p 3, k 1, p 2, k 14. 4th row: P 14, k 2, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 2, p 14. 5th row: K 14, p 2, make a circle st, p 2, k 14. 6th row: P 1, inc. 1 st, p 13, k 2, p 1, k 3, p 1, k 2, p 13, inc. 1 st, p 1 (39 sts). 7th to 10th rows incl: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows alternately, making k 15 instead of k 14, and p 15 instead of p 14. 11th row: K 1, inc. 1 st, k 14, p 2, k 1, p 3, k 1, p 2, k 14, inc. 1 st, k 1 (41 sts). 12th row: Same as 4th row, making p 16 instead of p 14. 13th row: Same as 5th row, making k 16 instead of k 14. Repeat these last 8 rows (6th to 13th incl.), increasing 1 st at both ends of every 9th row until there are 61 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 17 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows and 2 sts at beginning of each of the following 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 35 sts remain. Now bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 11 sts remain. Bind off.
Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in.
Neck Band. With right side of work toward you, and No. 3 needles, pick up 64 sts all around neck edge and p across. Change to No. 5 needles and k 1, 0, * k 2 tog., 0. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. Change to No. 3 needles and p across.
Hereafter work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 inch. Bind off.
