Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 7 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.
This slip-on starts at bottom of back, is worked up to shoulders and continued down the front. Starting at bottom with No. 1 needles cast on 118 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2¼ inches. Then change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), until work measures 12 inches from top of waistband.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 9 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then work straight for 4 rows. 1st row of Yoke: K 26, p 2, k 2, * p 6, k 2. Repeat from * 4 more times, p 4, k 26. 2nd row: P 26, k 4, * p 2, k 6. Repeat from * 4 more times, p 2, k 2, p 26. 3rd row: K 26, k 4, * p 2, k 6. Repeat from * 4 more times, p 2, k 2, k 26. 4th row: P 26, p 2, k 2, * p 6, k 2. Repeat from * 4 more times, p 4, p 26. 5th row: K 26, * p 6, k 2. Repeat from * 5 more times, k 26. 6th row: P 26, * p 2, k 6. Repeat from * 5 more times, p 26. 7th row: K 26, * p 2, k 6. Repeat from * 5 more times, k 26. 8th row: P 26, * p 6, k 2. Repeat from * 5 more times, p 26. 9th row: K 10, work in pattern to within the last 10 sts, k 10. Work the next 7 rows in pattern keeping the 1st and last 10 sts in stockinette st. Hereafter, work in pattern across entire 100 sts until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then to shape neck, with right side of work toward you, work in pattern across first 30 sts, bind off 40 sts (for back of neck), work in pattern across remaining 30 sts. Work over these last 30 sts for 2¼ inches ending with the right side of work towards you. Break off. Attach yarn to opposite side of neck edge, and work other shoulder to correspond, ending with the wrong side of work towards you. Do not break off, but cast on 40 sts (for front of neck), work in pattern across next 30 sts (100 sts on needle). Hereafter, work straight until piece measures 3 inches from cast on sts of neck. Next row: K 10, work in pattern to within last 10 sts, k 10. Work next 7 rows in pattern keeping 1st and last 10 sts in stockinette st. Work remainder of yoke to correspond with back. Work 4 more rows of stockinette st. Then cast on 9 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows and work Front to correspond with Back. Bind off.
Sleeves. With right side of work toward you, starting at beginning of 9 sts bound off for armhole shaping, with No. 3 needles pick up 104 sts across armhole to corresponding position on other side. Work in stockinette st for 1 inch. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 4th row thereafter until 90 sts remain. Then change to No. 1 needles, decreasing to 78 sts, making decreases at equal distances apart. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1½ inches. Bind off.
Neck Band: Holding right side of work toward you, with No. 1 needles pick up 48 sts along back of neck edge, from shoulder to shoulder. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1 inch. Bind off loosely. Then with No. 1 needles pick up 64 sts along remainder of neck edge, and work in ribbing for 1 inch. Bind off loosely. Sew back and front neck bands together on wrong side. Sew up underarm and sleeve seams.
