Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 11 balls (1 oz. balls).
1 oz. Angora.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
Gauge: 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.
Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 96 sts. 1st row: K 23; p 2, k 2 alternately across next 50 sts, k 23. 2nd row: P 23; k 2, p 2 alternately across next 50 sts, p 23. Repeat these 2 rows, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until 80 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 3rd row thereafter until there are 100 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 9½ inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 78 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 3¾ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row work in pattern across 1st 39 sts, turn (thus starting back opening). Work back and forth over these 39 sts only, until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, to shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge bind off 3 sts every other row until 15 sts remain. Bind off. Attach yarn at base of opening and work other side to correspond.
Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 102 sts. 1st row: K 26; p 2, k 2 alternately across the next 50 sts, k 26. 2nd row: P 26; k 2, p 2 alternately over the next 50 sts, p 26. Repeat these 2 rows, decreasing 1 st at both ends of 1 row every ½ inch until 90 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4 inches. Hereafter work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of 1 row every inch until there are 108 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 10½ inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 78 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from armhole shaping. Next row: K 14; p 2, k 2 alternately across the next 16 sts, bind off 18 sts (thus starting neck shaping), p 2, k 2 alternately across the next 16 sts, k 14. Hereafter work over these 30 sts, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every other row until 24 sts remain. To shape shoulder, bind off 3 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are bound off. Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge, and work to correspond.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 48 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 3 inches. Hereafter work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), increasing 1 st at both ends of every 7th row until there are 74 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 17 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until 48 sts remain. Now bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 21 sts remain. Bind off.
Tabs. With Angora cast on 2 sts. 1st row: K 1, p 1, inc. 1 st. 2nd row: P 1, k 1, p 1. Repeat these 2 rows until there are 6 sts on needle. Lay this piece aside, and make another piece same as this, but making increases at beginning of row instead of at end. On next row, work across 1st 6 sts, then across the 6 sts of 1st piece made. Continue over these 12 sts until piece measures 10 inches from where sts were joined. Then shape end as before, but decreasing where increases were made. Make 2 more pieces same as this.
Buttons. With Angora, ch 2, turn. 1st rnd: Make 6 s c in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: Make 2 s c in each s c around. Join. 3rd rnd: * S c in each of 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around until there are 24 s c in the rnd. Work 2 rnds straight. Then dec. every 4th s c until 6 s c remain. Stuff the buttons firmly with cotton batting and continue as before until no sts remain. Break off, leaving a long end. Make 3 more buttons same as this.
Sew up underarm seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. With main color work a row of s c all around neck edge and along both sides of back opening, making 4 ch-5 buttonloops on right side at equal distances apart. Sew on tabs as in illustration. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
