Size 2 and 4 Years

Instructions are written for size 2 years, changes for size 4 years are in parentheses.

Materials—Fleisher’s Casa-Laine Sport Yarn, 2 balls Navy for Pants and narrow stripes on Pullover; or Fleisher’s Sweater and Stocking Yarn, 2 skeins Navy for Pants and narrow stripes on Pullover.

Main color for Pullover, see Bud Outfit, No. 3184.

White Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Sizes 1, 2 and 3.

Gauge: Size 3 needles—7 sts = 1 inch; 9 rows = 1 inch

Measurements—Width at waistline 19 ½ (20 ½) ins. Length of back from crotch to top 10 (11 ½) ins.

Left Half Of Pants—With size 2 needles and Navy, cast on 80 (92) sts for lower edge. Work stockinette st—k 1 row, p 1 row—for 5 rows.

Next row—wrong side—K, forming a ridge on right side for turning hem. Change to size 3 needles. K 1 row, p 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row. Begin short rows.

First short row—Inc. 1 st in first st, k 7 (9); turn, slip 1, p 8 (10).

3rd short row—K 8 (10), with point of right needle take up st directly below slipped st and slip it to left needle, k this st together with slipped st to prevent hole in work, k 7 (8); turn, slip 1, p 15 (18).

Note:—Always work slipped st together with st directly below as in 3rd row.

5th row—Inc. 1 st in first st, k 22 (26); turn, slip 1, p 23 (27).

7th row—K 31 (36); turn, slip 1, p 30 (35).

9th row—Inc. 1 st in first st, k 37 (43); turn, slip 1, p 38 (44).

Next row—K across row to within 2 sts of end, inc. 1 st in next st, k last st; 84 (96) sts. Work short rows for other side as follows:

First short row—P 9 (11); turn, slip 1, k 8 (10).

3rd row—P 8 (10), p st directly below slipped st together with slipped st, p 7 (8); turn, slip 1, k 13 (16), inc. 1 st in next st, k last st.

5th row—P 24 (28); turn, slip 1, k 23 (27).

7th row—P 31 (36); turn, slip 1, k 28 (33), inc. 1 st in next st, k last st.

9th row—P 39 (45); turn, slip 1, k 38 (44).

Next row—P entire row; 86 (98) sts. Continue stockinette st on all sts. Increase 1 st each side of next row; repeat increases every 2nd row 3 (4) times; 94 (108) sts. Work 3 rows even. Dec. 1 st each side every row 3 times; every 2nd row 3 (4) times; every 4th row 3 (4) times; 76 (86) sts. Work 1 (1 ½) ins. even. Dec. 1 st each side on next row; repeat decreases every 1 ½ (2) ins. twice; 70 (80) sts. Work even until 9 (11) ins. above hemline at center, end with p row.

First short row for back shaping—K 35 (40); turn, slip 1, p 34 (39).

3rd row—K 28 (32); turn, slip 1, p 27 (31).

5th row—K 21 (24); turn, slip 1, p 20 (23).

7th row—K 14 (16); turn, slip 1, p 13 (15).

9th row—K 7 (8); turn, slip 1, p 6 (7).

Change to size 2 needles.

Next row—K, decreasing 1 st each side, working slipped sts as before (for size 4, k every 9th and 10th st tog across row); 68 (72) sts. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 1 ½ ins. Bind off in ribbing.

Right Half Of Pants—With size 2 needles, cast on 80 (92) sts. Work same as left half until 9 (11) ins. above hemline at center, end with k row.

First short row for back shaping—P 35 (40); turn, slip 1, k 34 (39). Working short rows from opposite edge, complete to correspond to left half.

Finishing—Sew sides of each half together from lower edge to end of increases for legs. Sew longer edges of right and left half together for center back; sew shorter edges together for center front. Turn up hem on lower edge of legs and sew. Steam.

PULLOVER

For instructions see see Bud Outfit, No. 3184, working narrow contrasting color stripes with navy yarn as used for pants as follows:

Stripe At Top Of Ribbing On Back—Continuing with size 1 needles, p 1 row, k 1 row with contrasting color. Break off. With size 2 needles and main color continue to follow instructions given for see Bud Outfit, No. 3184 to neck ribbing, end with p row.

Back Neck Ribbing—Before starting ribbing, with size 1 needles and contrasting color, k 1 row, p 1 row, break yarn. With main color, k 1 row. Work ribbing as given in instructions until 1 in., including stripe. Bind off.

Front—Work stripe at top of ribbing on front same as back.

Front Neck Ribbing—With size 1 needles and contrasting color, pick up and k number of sts given in instructions around neck edge. P 1 row. Break yarn. With main color, k 1 row. Work same number of rows ribbing as on back. Bind off.

Cuff Stripe—Work sleeves to within 2 rows of cuff dec. row, end with p row. With size 1 needles and contrasting color, k 1 row, p 1 row. Break yarn. With main color work dec. row and ribbing as per instructions. Finish as for see Bud Outfit, No. 3184. With navy embroider anchor in duplicate st.
