Materials—Fleisher's Superior Knitting Worsted, 9 (10) skeins, Coat 5 skeins, Leggings 3 (4) skeins, Bonnet 1 skein.

White Knitting Needles, 1 pair Size 2.
White Crochet Hook, Size 2.

Gauge: 13 sts = 2 inches; 9 rows = 1 inch

COAT

Measurements—Chest 27 (29) ins. Width of each front at underarm 9 1/2 (10) ins., including 5 1/2 (6) ins. overlap. Sleeves—Width 10 1/4 (11) ins.

Back—Cast on 125 (132) sts.

First row—P 38 (40), k 1, p 2, k 1, p 41 (44), k 1, p 2, k 1, p 38 (40).

2nd row—right side—K 38 (40), * p 1, twist next 2 sts by inserting needle through first st of left needle as t p, keeping yarn at back of work, k 2nd st only, slip st from needle drawing it through first st, k into back thread of first needle drawing it through first st, k into back thread of first st and slip from needle, p 1 *—4 sts in pattern stripe—k 41 (44), repeat between *'s once, k to end. Repeat these 2 rows for pattern. Work until 3 (2) ins. from beginning, end on wrong side.

First dec. row—K 2 tog, * k to within 3 sts of pattern stripe, k 2 tog, k 1, work 4 sts of stripe, k 1, slip, k and pass; repeat from * once, k to within 2 sts of end, k 2 tog; 6 sts decreased. Continue pattern; repeating dec. row every 1 (1 1/2) ins. 7 times; 77 (84) sts. Work even until 10 1/2 (13) ins. from beginning or desired length to waistline, place marker. Work 1 in. even, end on wrong side.

First inc. row—Inc. 1 st in first st, * k to within 2 sts of pattern stripe, inc. 1 st by knitting in back thread of next st in row below, k next 2 sts, work 4 sts of stripe, k 1, inc. 1 st as before; repeat from * once, finish row, increasing 1 st in last st. Work 1 1/2 ins. even. Repeat ins. row; 89 (96) sts. Work even until 14 (17) ins. from beginning, end on wrong side.

Armholes—First shift row—Bind off 5 (7) sts at beginning of row for underarm, k to within 3 sts of first stripe, k 2 tog, k 1, work stripe, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st as before, work to within 2 sts of next stripe, inc. 1 st as before, k 2, work stripe, k 1, slip, k and pass, finish row.

Next row—Bind off 5 (7) sts, finish row. Dec. 1 st at each armhole edge on next row; repeat armhole decreases every 2nd row twice. Work 1 row even.

2nd shift row—Dec. 1 st at each armhole edge; repeat dec. and inc. at sides of each stripe as for first shift row. Work 1 row even. Dec. 1 st at each armhole edge on next row; 69 (72) sts. Keeping armhole edge even, continue working the shift row every 8th row 4 times more; 69 (72) sts. Work even until 5 (5 1/2) ins. above underarm.

Shoulders—Bind off 6 sts at beginning of next 6 rows; 5 sts at beginning of next 2 rows (bind off 6 sts at beginning of next 8 rows); 23 (24) sts for each shoulder. Bind off 23 (24) sts.

Right Front—Cast on 87 (92) sts.

First row—P 38 (40), k 1, p 2, k 1, p 41 (44), k 1, p 2, k 1.

2nd row—right side—P 1, twist next 2 sts, p 1, k 41 (44), p 1, twist next 2 sts, p 1, k 38 (40) sts. Repeat these 2 rows for pattern until 3 (2) ins. from beginning, end on wrong side.

First dec. row—Work 4 sts of stripe, k 1, slip, k and pass, k to within 3 sts of pattern stripe, k 2 tog, k 1, work 4 sts of stripe, k 1, slip, k and pass, k to within 2 sts of end, k 2 tog; 83 (88) sts. Continue pattern, repeating dec. row every 1 (1 1/2) ins. 7 times; 55 (60) sts. Work even until same length as back to waistline, end on wrong side.

Next row—Work 4 sts of pattern stripe, k 1, bind off next 3 sts for first buttonhole, k to within 4 sts of next stripe; bind off next 3 sts for 2nd buttonhole, finish row. On following row cast on 3 sts over each buttonhole. Work even until same length as back to first inc. row, end on wrong side.

First inc. row—Work 4 sts of stripe, k 1, inc. 1 st as on back, k to within 2 sts of next stripe, inc. 1 st, k 2, work stripe, k 1, inc. 1 st, finish row increasing 1 st at end. Repeat inc. row 1 1/2 ins. above first inc. row; 63 (68) sts. Repeat buttonholes 3 (3 1/2) ins. above first set of buttonholes. Work even until same length as back to underarm, end on wrong side.

First shift row—Work 4 sts of pattern stripe, k 1, inc. 1 st, k to within 2 sts of next stripe, inc. 1 st, k 2, work stripe, k 1, slip, k and pass, k to end; 64 (69) sts.

Next row—Bind off 5 (7) sts for underarm, finish row. Shape armhole as on back, repeating shift row. Shape armhole as on back, repeating shift row every 8th row 4 times. Work even until 3 rows above 5th shift row; 58 (61) sts, end on wrong side.

Neck and Shoulder Shaping—Work first 16 (17) sts and slip on holder, bind off next 15 (16) sts for front neck edge, finish row. Dec. 1 st at neck edge every 2nd row twice, increasing before and decreasing after pattern stripe on last dec. row for 6th shift row. Repeat dec. at neck edge every 2nd row twice more; 23 (24) sts. Work even until 5 (5 1/2) ins. above underarm, end at armhole edge. Bind off 6 sts at beginning of next row, finish row.

Next row—Work to within 4 sts of stripe, bind off next 3 sts for buttonhole, finish row. Bind off 6 sts at beginning of next row, finish row, casting on 3 sts over buttonhole. Finish shoulder shaping as for back.

Take up 16 (17) sts from holder, join yarn at neck edge, work 1 row. Next row, dec. 1 st at neck edge. Work 1 row even. Next row, inc. 1 st after stripe for shift row, dec. 1 st at neck edge. Repeat dec. at neck edge every 2nd row twice. Work even until same number of rows as other side to buttonhole, end on wrong side.

Next row—Work pattern stripe, k 1, bind off 3 sts for buttonhole, finish row. Cast on 3 sts over buttonhole in next row. Bind off 7 sts at beginning of next row. Work 1 row even. Bind off 6 (7) sts.

Left Front—Cast on 87 (92) sts.

First row—K 1, p 2, k 1, p 41 (44), k 1, p 2, k 1, p 38 (40). Continue to correspond to right front, omitting buttonholes and reversing shaping.

Sleeves—Cast on 51 (54) sts. Work stockinette st, k 1 row, p 1 row, increasing 1 st each side every 1 in. 8 (9) times; 67 (72) sts. Work even until 9 1/2 (10 1/2) ins. from beginning, or desired length to underarm. Bind off 5 (7) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec. 1 st each side every 2nd row 4 times (twice); every 4th row 4 (6) times. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 6 rows. Bind off 17 (18) sts.

Collar—Cast on 68 (71) sts. K 1 row, p 1 row. K next row increasing 1 st in first, then in every 3rd st 22 (23) times, k 1; 91 (95) sts. Continue stockinette st until 2 1/2 ins. from beginning, end with p row. K 3 rows for turning ridge. P 1 row, k 1 row for 1 1/2 ins. for facing of collar, end with p row.

Next row—K 1, k 2 tog, * k 2, k 2 tog: repeat from * to end; 68 (71) sts. P 1 row. Bind off.

Finishing—Block each piece separately. Pin collar double in semi-circle 17 (17 1/2) ins. around outside edge and block. Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with seam at center underarm. Sew side seams of collar. With k side of collar facing to right side of coat, sew bound-off edge of collar to neck edge, with each short end at center front panel; sew cast on edge of collar to neck edge. Finish buttonholes. Working from right side, work 1 row of sc on free neck edge and shoulder of panel, also on lower edge of sleeves and coat, keeping work flat. Steam.

LEGGINGS

Measurements—Length at front from top of waistline to crotch 10 1/2 (12) ins.—to heel 25 (28) ins.

Right Leg—Cast on 76 (80) sts. Work k 2, p 2, ribbing for 5 rows.

Beading row—right side—* K 2, yo, p 2 tog; repeat from * to end. Work ribbing until 1 1/2 ins. from beginning, end on right side. Continue ribbing, increasing 1 st in every 10th st 7 times, finish row; 83 (87) sts. Work short rows for back shaping.

First short row—K 7 sts; turn, slip 1 st, p to end.

3rd short row—K 15; turn, slip 1 st, p to end.

5th short row—K 23; turn, slip 1 st, p to end. Continue short rows, working 8 sts more every k row, 3 (4) times more; turn, slip 1, p to end. Discontinue short rows, work all sts in stockinette st, increasing 1 st each side every 1 1/2 ins. 5 times; then every 2nd row 7 (8) times; 107 (115) sts. Work should measure 10 1/2 (12) ins. at front edge, from beginning. Work 2 rows even. Dec. 1 st each side on next row. Repeat dec. every 1/2 ins. 14 (17) times; 77 (79) sts. Work even until 7 1/2 (9) ins. from crotch—first dec.—end on wrong side.

Divide sts for side opening—K 38 sts, slip to holder for back of leg and foot. Work remaining 39 (41) sts decreasing 1 st each side every 1/2 ins. 7 times; 25 (27) sts. Work even until 4 1/2 ins. from beginning of opening, end on wrong side.

Foot—K 12 (13) sts, inc. 1 st by making a loop on right hand needle, k 1, mark for center st, inc. 1 st as before, k to end.

2nd row—P 13 (14), inc. as before, p 1, inc. as before, p to end. Continue to inc. 1 st each side of center st, as in last 2 rows until 61 (63) sts. Work 2 rows even. Bind off, working every 5th and 6th st tog. Slip sts from holder to needle. Dec. 1 st each side every 1/2 in. 7 times; 24 sts. Work even until same length as front of leg at side seam, omitting foot increases. Bind off.

Left Leg—Cast on 76 (80) sts. Work ribbing, beading row and inc. row as for right leg; 83 (87) sts. K 1 row.

First short row—P 7; turn, slip 1 st, k to end.

3rd short row—P 15; turn, slip 1 st, k to end. Work short rows as for right leg, purling 8 sts more every p row. Work to correspond to right leg to beginning of side opening; 77 (79) sts. Divide sts for side opening: K 39 (41) sts for front, slip remaining 38 sts to holder. Finish as for right leg.

Finishing—Block each piece. Sew seams. Working from right side, work 1 row sc on sides of opening and around lower edge of foot, keeping edge flat. Sew 7-in. slide fasteners at openings.

Cord—With 2 strands of yarn ch 40 (42) ins. Sew 3 1/2 ins. of elastic across each instep.

BONNET

Back—Cast on 20 (22) sts for back of neck.

First row—K 1, p 2, k 1, p 12 (14), k 1, p 2, k 1.

2nd row—right side—P 1, twist next 2 sts, as for coat pattern, p 1, k to within 4 sts of end, p 1, twist 2 sts, p 1. Repeat these 2 rows, increasing 1 st each side of stockinette st panel as for center panel of back of coat every 6th (8th) row 6 times; 32 (34) sts. Work even until 5 1/2 (6) ins. from beginning, end on right side.

Front—Cast on 36 (38) sts at beginning of next 2 rows; 104 (110) sts. Continue pattern stripes; work all other sts in stockinette st, decreasing 1 st each side every 8th row 4 times; 96 (102) sts. Work 1 (3) rows even.

Next row—right side—K 31 (33), slip, k and pass, twist 2 sts, k 2 tog, k 5, k 2 tog 6 (7) times in succession, k 5, slip, k and pass, twist 2 sts, k 2 tog, k to end; 86 (91) sts. Discontinue pattern stripes. P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row.

Brim—First row—K, increasing 1 st in every 5th st 16 (17) times, k to end; 102 (108) sts. P 1 row. Begin short rows.

3rd row—K to within 3 sts of end. Turn, slip first st, p to within 3 sts of end. Work 10 more short rows, slipping first st and working 3 sts less each row than in preceding row; 66 (72) sts worked in last row.

Inc. row—Turn, slip 1 st, * k 10 (11), inc. 1 st as for back of coat; repeat from * 4 times, k to within 4 sts of end of last row. Turn, slip 1 st, p t within 4 sts of end of last row. Work 10 more short rows, slipping first st; working 4 sts less each row than in preceding row; 23 (29) sts worked in last row. Break yarn. Do not turn. Slip the 42 sts from left hand needle to right hand needle; 107 (113) sts. Join yarn, k 3 rows for turning ridge of brim. Begin 2nd set of short rows.

First row—P 69 (75) sts. Turn, slip 1, k 30 (36). Turn, slip 1, p 34 (40). Turn, slip 1, k 38 (44). Continue short rows, working 4 sts more at end of next 8 rows; 71 (77) sts worked on last row.

Dec. row—Turn, slip 1, * p 10 (11), p 2 tog; repeat from * 4 times, p to end of short row, p 3 more sts. Work 11 more short rows, working 3 sts more at end of each row; 102 (108) sts.

Dec. row—* P 4, p 2 tog; repeat from * 15 (16) times, p 6; 86 (91) sts. Bind off as to k.

Finishing—Block back and front of Bonnet. Fold brim double, block. Sew cast-on edges of front to side edge of back. Insert a 21 (22) in. wire under turning ridge at inside of brim. Working from wrong side of brim, work a row of sc over wire, inserting hook through both thicknesses. Sew ends of wire. Working from right side, work 2 rows sc on neck edge, holding in to 9 (9 1/2) ins. Sew bound-off edge of brim facing to brim, sew ribbon over seam.

Trimming—Cast on 4 sts. Work pattern of stripe until 13 (14) ins. Steam, stretching to 14 (15) ins. Sew over first row of brim. Trim with wide ribbon.
