JACKET
Cast on 195 sts on No. 3 needles. 1st row: K 1, p 1 alternately across, ending row with k 1. Repeat 1st row for 6½ inches (moss stitch). Next row: Make a buttonhole 3 sts in from Left Front edge for a boy, or 3 sts in from Right Front edge for a girl—to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 3 sts; on next row cast on 3 sts to replace those bound off. Continue in moss stitch, making a buttonhole every 1¼ inches (measuring from first buttonhole) until 3 in all are made; however, when piece measures 8½ inches, work as follows:
Work across 55 sts (Left Front), bind off 2 sts to start armhole shaping, work across next 81 sts (Back); bind off 2 sts for other armhole, work remaining 55 sts.
RIGHT FRONT … Work over last 55 sts only, decreasing 1 st at armhole edge every other row 4 times (51 sts). Work straight until piece measures 4 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Next row: Starting at front edge, bind off 23 sts (neck shaping) and continue across row. Work in pattern, decreasing 1 st at neck edge each row until 21 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Bind off for shoulder.
BACK … Attach yarn and work across next 81 sts, decreasing 1 st at end of each row 10 times (71 sts). Work straight until piece measures 4½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Next row: Work across 1st 25 sts, bind off 21 sts (neck shaping), work across remaining 25 sts. Work over last 25 sts, decreasing 1 st at neck edge each row until 21 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Bind off. Attach yarn at neck edge and work opposite side to correspond.
LEFT FRONT … Attach yarn at armhole edge and work to correspond with Right Front.
SLEEVES … Starting at bottom, with No. 2 needles cast on 52 sts and work 3 inches in ribbing of k 2, p 2, increasing 13 sts on last row (65 sts). Change to No. 3 needles and work 7½ inches in moss stitch. To shape top, dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 31 sts remain. Bind off.
Sew up shoulder and sleeve seams; sew in sleeves.
FRINGE … Cut a cardboard 1¼" x 2". With right side of Right Front toward you, attach yarn at lower edge and insert crochet hook, yarn over and draw through a loop; * place loop over width of cardboard, insert hook in next st, yarn over and draw through a loop. Repeat from * until cardboard is covered with loops. Do not break off but, with another ball of yarn, make an s c into each loop at top of cardboard. Drop this strand when all loops are fastened at top, insert hook in next st of Right Front and continue thus until loops are made along Right Front edge and around neck edge to within 2 inches of Left Front edge. Fasten off both strands. Fold row of loops in half and whip down s c-edge to wrong side. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes; then sew on second row of buttons 2½ inches away from 1st row. Fasten at neck edge with 2 snap fasteners. Make 2 chains, each 1 inch long, and sew to sides of jacket, 5 inches up from bottom, for belt loops. Press through damp cloth.
BELT … With No. 2 needles cast on 10 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 20 inches. Bind off. Press through damp cloth, stretching to 26 inches. Sew 2 rings to one end of belt.

Change to No. 3 needles and work in moss stitch, increasing 1 st at one side only every 4th row (inner edge) until there are 53 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 13 inches in all. Break off. Transfer these sts onto a spare needle. Make another piece like this, ending at inner edge; cast on 35 sts for gusset and continue across first piece (141 sts). Work 2 rows straight. Then work as follows: 1st row: Work across 53 sts; insert a marker on needle, dec. 1 st and work across 31 sts; dec. 1 st, insert another marker (sts inside markers are gusset), work to end of row. 2nd row: Work straight across. 3rd row: Work across, decreasing 1 st at each end of gusset (inside markers). 4th row: Work straight across. Repeat the 3rd and 4th rows alternately until 1 st remains in gusset. Work straight over the remaining 107 sts until piece measures 23½ inches in all. Dec. 3 sts, change to No. 2 needles and work waistband in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for ½ inch. On next row, make a buttonhole (bind off 2 sts) 20 sts in from each edge. On following row cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off. Continue with ribbing for ½ inch. Bind off.

Work over these last 51 sts, decreasing 1 st at outer edge every 3rd row for remainder of piece; at the same time, binding off 4 sts every other row at inner edge 8 times. Now dec. 1 st at inner edge each row, continuing with decreases at outer edge until all sts are worked off. Break off. Work opposite side to correspond.
