Size 3
MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART SHETLAND FLOSS, 5 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
GAUGE: 10 rows make 1 inch.
FRONT … Cast on 90 sts on No. 3 needle. With No. 1 needles work as follows: 1st row: K 2, * p 2, k 2. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: P 2, * k 2, p 2. Repeat from * across (right side). Repeat these 2 rows alternately for pattern. Work for 1½ inches. Then change to No. 3 needles and continue until piece measures 10½ inches in all.
To Shape Armholes: Work across the first 4 sts, then take them off on a safety pin, to be worked later for sleeve. Work across the next 82 sts and take off the remaining 4 sts on another pin. Work straight for 2 inches. To shape neck, work across first 34 sts, bind off next 14 sts, and work to end of row. Turn and work over these last 34 sts only, binding off 3 sts at neck edge every other row 4 times. Dec. 1 st at same edge every other row twice (20 sts remain). Work straight until piece measures 4 inches from where the sts were taken off on pin. Bind off for shoulder. Attach yarn at neck edge and work other side to correspond.
BACK … Work same as Front, omitting neck shaping, until piece measures l4½ inches in all. Bind off, in ribbing—20 sts for shoulder; bind off loosely 42 sts for back of neck; bind off 20 sts for other shoulder.
FRONT NECK BAND … With right side facing, using No. 1 needles, pick up 70 sts along neck edge. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 8 rows. Bind off loosely in ribbing. Starting at armhole edge, sew shoulder seams, matching ribbing.
BACK NECK BAND ... With right side facing, using No. 1 needles, pick up 42 sts between shoulder seams and work as for front neck band.
SLEEVES ... With right side facing, using No. 3 needles, pick up the sts taken off on pin at one armhole; attach yarn and pick up 66 sts around armhole. Pick up the 4 sts from other pin on left-hand needle and work across these sts (74 sts on needle). 1st row: K 2, * p 2, k 2. Repeat from * across. Work straight in pattern for 1½ inches. Dec. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until 54 sts remain. Work straight until sleeve measures 8½ inches. Change to No. 1 needles and work 1½ inches. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
Sew seams in neck bands; then fold in half and whip down loosely on the inside, covering ridge where sts were picked up. Sew up underarm and sleeve seams. Steam all seams lightly through a damp cloth.
