Directions are given for Size 10½. Changes for Sizes 11½ and 12½ are in parentheses.

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply ("Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 5 (6, 6) ozs. of No. 339 Walnut.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 6.

GAUGE: (Stockinette st): 5 sts = 1 inch; 7 rows = 1 inch.

TOP ... Starting at toe cast on 11 sts. Working in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), increase 1 st at both ends of 3rd row then every other row until there are 33 sts on needle. Work even until total length is 5 (5½, 6) inches, ending with a p row.

SIDES ... K 11, bind off next 11 sts, k re­maining 11 sts. Working over the last set of sts only, continue in stockinette st for 5½ (6, 6½) inches. Bind off. Attach yarn to first set of 11 sts and work other side to correspond.

Border: With right side facing starting at back, pick up and k 26 (28, 30) sts at top edge of one side. Next 9 rows: K across. Bind off. Starting at front work other side to correspond.

SOLE (make 2)... Starting at heel, cast on 11 sts. 1st row: K 1, * sl 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: Increasing 1 st at both ends p across—13 sts. 3rd row: K 2, * sl 1, k 1. Repeat from * across ending with k 2 instead of k 1. 4th row: Repeat 2nd row—15 sts. Next 5 rows: Re­peat first, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd and first rows— 19 sts. 10th row: P across. Repeat first and 10th rows alternately until piece measures 4½ (5, 5½) inches. Keeping continuity of pattern, inc 1 st at both ends of every p row until there are 25 (27, 29) sts on needle. Work even until total length is 8 (9, 10) inches. Keeping con­tinuity of pattern, dec 1 st at both ends of every p row until 9 sts remain. Bind off. Sew free ends of border to bound-off sts at front, overlapping ¼ inch at center. Sew back seam. With wrong sides to­gether, sew Soles together. Sew Top to Soles.
