Diamond Argyle Socks Pattern

Sizes 9½ to 12½

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" SUPER FIN­GERING, 3 Ply (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 3 skeins of No. 403 Lt. Oxford and 1 skein each of No. 12 Black and No. 676 Emerald Green. Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 1 and No. 2.

15 bobbins.

GAUGE: 15 sts = 2 inches; 10 rows = 1 inch.

Starting at cuff with No. 2 needles and Oxford, cast on 64 sts. Change to No. 1 needles and work in k 2, p 2 ribbing for 3 inches, decreasing 2 sts evenly spaced on last row (62 sts).

NOTE: When changing colors, always twist the unused color around the other to prevent making holes. Chart shows one half of each row. To complete row, work across to center, then follow chart back to beginning. Wind 10 Black and 5 Emerald bobbins. Carry the Oxford loosely across each row. Change to No. 2 needles and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) as fol­lows: 1st row: Attach Black and k 2, * with Oxford k 4, attach Emerald and k 2, with Oxford k 4, attach Black and k 2. Repeat from * across. Starting with 2nd row on chart, follow chart to top. Then repeat 9th to 20th rows inclusive until 74 rows have been completed, end­ing with 14th row. Break off.

Divide sts for Heel as follows: Slip the first and last 16 sts on 2 stitch holders to be worked later for Heel.

INSTEP … Attach yarn and work as be­fore over the center 30 sts omitting pattern on first and last 2 sts only, until 66 rows have been completed, ending with 20th row. Break off. Place sts on a stitch holder to be worked later. Remainder of sock is made with Oxford only.

COMPLETION OF ARGYLE SOCKS - HEEL … Transfer the sts from both stitch holders to a No. 2 needle and with wrong side facing, work as follows: 1st. row: Sl 1, p across. 2nd row: * Sl 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat last 2 rows until heel measures 2¼ inches, ending with a p row.

To Turn Heel: 1st row: K 18, k 2 tog, k 1. Turn. 2nd row: Sl 1, p 5, p 2 tog, p 1. Turn. 3rd row: Sl 1, k 6, k 2 tog, k 1. Turn. 4th row: Sl 1, p 7, p 2 tog, p 1. Turn. Continue in this manner, working 1 more st between decreases, until all heel sts have been worked, ending with a p row (18 sts remain).

SOLE…With right side facing and spare needle, pick up and k 16 sts along right side of Heel. With same needle, k 9 sts from Heel needle, with a double-pointed needle k 9 sts, then pick up and k 16 sts along other side of Heel. Work over these sts only as follows: 1st row: P across. 2nd row: K 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k across to last 3 sts of 2nd needle, k 2 tog, k 1. Repeat the last 2 rows until 30 sts remain. With 2 needles only, work even until Sole measures from back of Heel, 7 inches for Size 9½; 7½ inches for Size 10; 8 inches for Size 10½; 8½ inches for Size 11; 9 inches for Size 11½; 9½ inches for Size 12; 10 inches for Size 12½; or 2½ inches less than desired finished length.

To Shape Toe: With right side of work facing, work as follows: 1st row: K 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k across to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1. 2nd row: P across. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until 10 sts re­main. Place these sts on a spare needle.

Attach yarn to Instep sts and work in stockinette st until piece measures same as Sole. Shape Toe as for Sole. Weave remaining Instep and Sole sts tog, see patternbook page. Sew Back and Instep seams. Press lightly.
